While Jim Brown was perhaps best known as a running back for the Cleveland Browns (he’s still today arguable the best football player of all time. Was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971), Jim Brown’s life was so much more than that.

After his playing career, Brown became a bit of a Hollywood star, starting in films such as “The Dirty Dozen” and “Any Given Sunday.”

But without question, Brown’s most lasting legacy will be his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Something he did both during and after his playing career at a time that doing so was not only dangerous to one’s career, but also to one’s life. And while this activism shouldn’t be reduced to just one act, perhaps his organization of the Cleveland Summit best sums up Browns courage and commitment to change.

This summit, which included Brown, Bill Russell and Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabber) among others, came about to show support for Muhammad Ali who was facing jail time for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War.

So call Brown a football star, call him an actor, or call him an activist/humanitarian. But whatever you call him, make sure that you call him a LEGEND. Rest in Peace Jim Brown.
