It terms of getting the best roles maybe. But they will never reach the popularity of old movie stars. Those days are gone.

Also Austin Butler seems like the odd one out. Several years older than the other 3 and not as famous.

How did Austin Butler sneak in there 😭 I know he has Dune II and Elvis under his belt but… ‘the new power in Hollywood’??

Florence is über talented and an indie stand-out, Timothée has had starring credits for years now, Zendaya is the people’s princess, and Austin is still the guy who did the Elvis voice to me

Timothee yes, off the strength of CMBYN’s success (and to a lesser extent Dune), but the rest have not proven themselves to hold a tentpole film on their own steam. Zendaya (as much as I love her) has only had streaming projects thus far which isn’t evidence for her box office presence, Austin has had one major role off the back of major brand recognition like Elvis (and an ensemble role in OUATIH), and Florence has primarily played ensemble roles in her bigger films (Little Women, Dune and Oppenheimer coming up) or in indie movies (Midsommar), she could’ve claimed DWD’s relative box office success for herself but didn’t. Their next major projects will be the test of their Hollywood power, right now it’s lip service in the number of roles that are offered to them and the buzz around them.

  4. Ok controversial take but is Timmy THAT good? He was great in CMBYN and Beautiful Boy but nothing he’s done since has made me feel like he’s pushed any further than that. I’m not denying his talent, I just don’t get as excited as I used to seeing him. But I accept that he’s very popular and qualifies as new power.

I mean, he can have an opinion about the actors he’s chosen to cast. I just hope dune 2 isn’t zzzzz

  6. If we succumb and say yes will they finally shut the fuck up about this whole movie star discourse?

  7. Lol of course the director who wants to hype up his movie says that about the actors he casted. 🥱

If Joe still datet Taylor, she would have bought him onto that list 😝

On another note, Austin? Hasn‘t he been only famous for like six months?

This sub when there’s no new young actors in Hollywood: “When will we get rid of these old ass Hollywood stars and get some new stars and faces”

This sub when theres new emerging stars being pushed by Hollywood that are talented and young: “They wont be stars/arent talented enough/ dOnT hAvE tHe IT fAcToR”

Can yall make up your mind? Do you WANT new stars or are you fine with the same old 5 faces in Hollywood? I for one hope these 4 make a big name for themselves in the industry and have a bright future

meh movie stars era are over. i would only go if the trailer is good not bc of the actors tbh

  11. eatmeetswest on

Sure, but of course he would, they’re all in the movie he’s plugging. Who else that he hasn’t worked with did he name? I’d also be curious to see Austin’s longevity as the top of the food chain as he has now.

  12. How is zendaya considered such a box office draw when she has not lead a movie to massive box office success yet?

They’re great actors, but there are others who are equally as good if not better. Daniel Kaluuya for example is a powerhouse and one of the best from this generation. I’ve seen everything he’s in (except Queen and Slim) just because he’s in it. Same with Lupita Nyong’o and John Boyega.

I get excited anytime someone like Jordan Peele has a movie coming out because he knows how to utilize those talents and apparently no one else in Hollywood does. I’m not going to see Dune for any of those guys, Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors and he’s the only real thing drawing me to this story. He could’ve had anybody else in those roles and I’d still go watch it.

Is Denis Villeneuve a good director? Yes. Does he have the authority to state who the new movie stars of Hollywood are? No, not really. And in any case, you shouldn’t have to say who the movie stars are, everyone should just inherently ***know***. Saying that Austin Butler is a movie star does not make him a movie star.

This discussion is kinda pointless to me because, why does it matter? It’s basically about status among actors and bankability for studio executives, so why should I, a simple movie watcher, care about this?

It’s still unlikely anyway, the movie ecosystem has changed and some people need to get over it. I saw these tweets yesterday and I agree with them, it’s not bad or good, it just is.

  16. A list director compliments the A list actors in his upcoming blockbuster.

I don’t really feel like anyone reaches the same level of fame the way they used to, maybe that’s just me. I feel like social media being so prominent allows us to discard people super quickly so we can move on to the next.

  18. The only person who shown he’s the new power in Hollywood is Michael B Jordan. Out of the names ppl drop daily only Mike’s box office as well as his production company show any proof of him being the new power of Hollywood. Florence,Timothee and especially zendaya haven’t even proven themselves yet even Austin hasn’t either

  19. Jeanitschristmas on

Don’t really get why people are disagreeing with this take. Even if he hired them or not they’re the next-gen in Hollywood and the actors who will have the pick of roles.

  20. AnotherWin83 on

He has only worked with those 4 …so I don’t think he can comment on anyone else. Literally if he had cast any others —he would say the same. Do I agree? Not really. None of them are box office draws —we have seen it.

Are they 4 among many of popular names in the under 35 group? Sure. But that’s about it.

As far as getting people to the theaters…For Dune anyone could have been cast and the movie would sell. It’s a beloved and known IP. Hell I think the director is more the draw with Dune than them. It’s been said over and over.

Good. I’m glad to see a new era with new faces. They’re all beautiful and talented
