Sandra Oh talks off-Broadway play ‘The Welkin,’ knowing her value

Sandra o is an Emmy nominated actress and a producer who starred in dozens of movies and TV shows over the past three decades and lately she’s been as busy as ever that’s right Sandra’s currently starring in the HBO Mac Show the sympathizer and she is getting ready to hit the stage starring in the Off Broadway play the welen okay this is intense this off Broadway show is completely intense tell us about it tell us oh it’s set during 17 1959 I think during um Haley’s Comet oh and it centers around a jury of women who have to decide on whether to put a fellow woman to death wow uh it’s also funny it’s also funny it’s also funny but it’s uh it just explores Womanhood in its entirety in its power in its grief in its Mercy in its childbearing gosh and and I got to tell you so there’s a a cast of six 16 actors but 13 women are on stage all the time and that’s one of the reasons why it’s one I love live theater you cannot help because also the Atlantic theater is an intimate space it’s in it’s in a church so you’re really with the audience like we’re basically on top of you um and so uh it’s just a thrill to do do you know what I loved reading about about you is that this was your dream like you I think some people watch watch actors and think oh you know when Gray’s Anatomy that must have been the Dre Eve that’s the dream but really you’re going back to where you dreamed of I think so like being you know a small child in a tiny town in Canada what I really wanted to do was I was so uh influenced by the TV show oh my God that’s so cute so the TV show Fame all I wanted to do was go to PA and then sing and dance on top of cars um and really come to New York and be and do live theater so I’m really happy to be able to do what happened to the dancing singing part well dancing I will say um you know a part of our warm-up as actually uh a company is we usually have a dance party right before fight call um and so and so we all get on stage and it’s so great cuz everyone is in together like as an organism but everyone is just dancing and doing own maybe we need to start that oh that would be good we’re so into like confidence and what gives people confidence Audrey McDonald was sitting in that seat I don’t remember a couple of days ago and she’s won more tonies than anyone and she was telling us about her impostor syndrome and that she’s had it until today and I found that right we were like were shocked no more yeah we that’s what she said how did she explain that she just said that each day she feels like she’s got to get up there and prove it and prove it and prove it and the accolades do not matter no that has nothing to do with it that’s interesting yeah you can name that impostor syndrome but I think that it is also the drive to reach something you know what I mean I I don’t think at this point she’s anywhere near needing approval in any kind of way but it’s her own sense of either reaching a space or reaching a level that she wants to be at about for you well I think I that I understand that I feel like I do not have imposters sorry I’ve been working too long and too hard to know that feels good now yes I’m not but the the drive or the reach or the line for that yeah so to be able to kind of like do projects like the welin and like the sympathizer it’s great to kind of go oh no um I’m still reaching but I feel landed yes and and your family’s going to come see you and I know this is kind of beautiful and emotional more than maybe some people would expect well you know this time around my sister is bring my nieces you know they’re at an age where they can understand you know somewhat of a a heavy play and uh they’ve been watching me perform for a long time haven’t done a play a full play since 2016 so it’s been it’s it’ll be great for them to come out what about your mom oh my mom my oh my God my mom my mom she said before I die right so let me just say before I die I wanted to to do two things I want to see you on stage and I want to see your brother’s house in Boston and um I like okay Mom we can figure that out we can figure that out so she’ll come and it’s great cuz it’s even though you know I sent her the play she’s very hard hearing but I sent her the play and we just have a a great relationship where we can really talk about the subject matter so beautiful she did good she did she Sandra thank you so much we would sit with you all day so wel in you all opens Wednesday June 12th at the Atlantic Theater Company here in New York and the sympathizer is an incredible show we needed more time to talk about streaming now on Mac coming up next we’re celebrating pride month with a story of someone very close to this girl’s heart he’s living a life he always dreamed of and you’ll get to meet him right after this I mean all right you are awesome [Music]
