Interesting to think about! Elves are described as "the fairest race," iirc. So it always stood out to me how, although he's not a bad-looking guy, Hugo Weaving was never likely to win any handsomest-man-alive contests.
Then someone told me (reminded me, maybe) that Elrond is a half-elf. That may explain the casting.
In contrast, I believe many androphiles would vote Cumberbatch as sexiest ever.
Why did Tolkien write twelve dwarves? They're hard for readers to keep track of.
My only critique would be that this story should have had Bilbo and not Frodo in the time frame with these particular characters, otherwise, not exactly the group of actors I would have picked but not exactly poor choices either.
Christian Bale would make a better Aragorn than Thorin.
