Chappell Roan Talks Outfit Inspirations, New Album and Your Favorite Artist’s Favorite Artist

-I mean, fantastic. Welcome to the show. You look fantastic. Thank you so much for being here. -Thank you for letting me borrow this outfit. -No problem. Just give it back for the weekend. I need it for the weekend. Uh, your career is currently exploding right now. Uh, everyone’s talking about Chappell Roan, and I wanted you to maybe look at this photo and tell me what you remember about this. Uh, do you remember this scene? Where were you, and what was it? What was going on with — with your life here? -I had no money, and I was working at a doughnut shop, and I was performing at this weird gay festival. Love. Um, and… -Yeah. You were working at a donut shop. -I think that was the first time I performed "Pink Pony Club" in front — like, in the world. -Really? -Yeah. -Here’s you, uh, last week or two weeks ago at the Governors Ball. This is the crowd here. [ Cheers and applause ] Look at you. Come on. Look at this. Look at that. [ Chuckles ] Uh…I’m so happy. What does it feel like? -Um, it feels like I was right all along, and… [ Laughter ] -That’s right. Good for you. -Yeah. It feels like — Yeah, I did it. I mean, I feel kind of like I made it already whenever I was like, oh, my God, people showed up to my concert, like, a few years ago. It was like, people came? -Yeah. -And that’s kind of — Everything else has been the cherry on top. -Yeah. Well, I heard that when you first signed your record deal that there was a high school announcement over the loudspeakers that said that, uh, you signed a record deal, also that the lunch special was pizza. [ Laughter ] -Yeah, it was in the same sentence. -In the same sentence. -Yeah, and everyone was like, she’s lying. She’s lying. -Isn’t that great? But that must be exciting. And then to sign a record deal, and then you go, hey, I think, uh, I’m not sure if this is what I want to do. And you kind of go, I might give up music. -Yeah, I gave it a year because it was just like I had no — I didn’t, like actually start making money where I could afford my rent until, like, the past couple — maybe like a year and a half, maybe a year. -And what were you going to do? -And — Well, I was going to go to school and like go — I was going to move back home and probably just like take a break from music and… I was thinking about coming — becoming an esthetician or something. But the other thing I’m really good at is genetics. So I was like either singer or genetic person, so… [ Laughter ] -Uh… -What is that called? What is a genetic…? -I don’t know, I have no idea. I’m trying to think of what a genetic person is. -I don’t know. -But — Yeah, well, you got that to fall back on. [ Laughter ] I mean, I want to do that, too. You’re now known for your on stage looks. You have a great sense of style. -Thank you. -Uh, these are some of your onstage looks. The Statue of Liberty was fantastic. Um, what is the, um — what’s the inspiration? Where are you pulling the inspiration on these looks? -Well, my stylist, Genesis Webb, and I just, like, um, we pull from drag, we pull from horror movies, we pull from burlesque, we pull from theatre. Like, I love looking pretty and scary and like… Or like pretty and tacky or pretty — like… Or just not pretty. I love that too. -Yeah, yeah. -But, yeah, I just think it’s just not serious. I think that — -Yeah, you’re fun. -It’s, like, it’s never — I love that fans, like, find such deep meanings to things. And I’m just like, I don’t know, I thought I looked hot, so that’s why. -Yeah. -Like, I don’t know if it’s anything more than that. -You said something at Coachella that I loved. You said, I’m Chappell Roan, and I’m your favorite artists’ favorite artist. And that was… [ Cheers and applause ] -That was a reference to Sasha Colby. [ Cheers and applause ] And she says — There’s gay people here. [ Laughter ] -Yes, yes, there are gay people here. -Sasha Colby said, I’m your favorite drag queens’ favorite drag queen. And I was like, it just hit me through the heart. And so I was like, I hope Sasha Colby one day watches me, and that’s why I said it. -Sasha, if you’re hearing right now, yeah. Thank you for the… [ Cheers and applause ] I Googled you, uh, today just to see what pops up, and it says… -Did you not know who I was before? -No. [ Laughter ] [ Cheers and applause ] Hey, I can do — I can sing — I can sing all of your… I can — I can do it. Yeah. No, I just wanted to see what popped up. -Well, I Googled you, too. You wanna know what comes up? [ Laughter ] -I don’t want to know what pops up, but can you zoom in right there? It says, "Did you mean: your favorite artist’s favorite artist?" I think that’s kind of fun. -I didn’t do that. -No, no, no, the world did that. -No. It’s this random twink that works at Google. I know it is. I know it’s just some — it’s some assistant that, like… we love her! You know what I mean? -That’s why you have friends. That’s why you have friends. That’s why you have friends and fans. Can I just go through some of the stats that’s happening right now? Because I just love you so much. You currently have three songs on the Billboard Hot 100. [ Cheers and applause ] That’s amazing. -Thank you. -Good Luck, Babe!" "Good Luck, Babe!" Is what you’re doing — you’re performing tonight. Which, thank you for doing that because — -Thank you. [ Cheers and applause ] -Every time I hear it on the radio, I have to turn it up. I can’t — It’s my favorite song right now. It’s been on the hot 100 for 10 weeks, and it has almost 200 million streams on Spotify. In just a few months, you went from 2 million to 21 million monthly Spotify listeners. And your album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," went to number one on the US iTunes charts. Come on now. [ Cheers and applause ] You don’t have to Google. You don’t have to Google it. No, no, no, no, no. Uh, when you came up with this album, what kind of album did you want to make here? -I just wanted to make something that I could party to and other people could party to, and something that, like, I would never be sad, like, or bored performing. And because I think that’s been in the past, like, that’s why I changed so hard to pop, pop, pop because it was so boring performing sad songs. It’s like not fun to go on tour and, like, be sad for months and months and months. -Yeah. No. Yeah. It’s not good for you. -It’s like everyone is already like that anyway, so I just wanted something to party to and, like, I did. -Here’s the single "Good Luck, Babe!" right now. So everyone go on your Spotify or whatever you’re listening to music on, call your deejays and ask to listen to "Good Luck, Babe!" Uh, this is Chappell Roan, everybody, and, uh, we’re so excited you’re here. "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" is available right now. Chappell’s performing for us after the break! Stick around! Stay tuned!

  1. Hey little queer artist reading this: Don't you give up! Look at her! The people who will love you for you are waiting for you! Your place in the sun is out there! Don't you dare give up!

  2. the thing that kills me the most about the "its some random twink that works at google" part is that I, as a gay man myself, think shes probably actually right 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  3. I don’t know what is in the Ozarks’s water, but:
    Chappell Roan- Willard
    Jake Wesley Rogers-Ozark
    Brad Pitt-Springfield
    Lucas Grabeel-“
    Kathleen Turner-“
    Jay Kenneth Johnson-“
Tess Harper-“ and that just part of the list

  4. I googled her earlier today and I saw that 'did you mean' thing and I was confused. I'm very new to her music but I already love everything about her.
