Conservative Christian bigot but not a racist Gentlemen Prefer Blondes one of Jane’s most well-known roles was in the classic film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes this is also where she met one for her closest friends Jane played Dorothy Shaw in the hit movie but maybe the best thing that came from this was that friendship with Marilyn Monroe Jane remembered Marilyn as very shy and very sweet and far more intelligent than people gave her credit for in gentleman Prefer Blondes Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell play best friends who are very different from each other Marilyn’s character Laura Li Lee is a blonde gold digger who wants to marry a rich man on the other hand Jane’s character Dorothy Shaw is a wise and witty brunette who loves handsome men even though they have different views on love they stay loyal to each other throughout the movie at first glance Gentlemen Prefer Blondes seem to be about two women chasing after men on a cruise ship however the movie is actually about the strong friendship between the two women their chemistry is what makes the movie special with the men in the background not standing out as much as the women do from the beginning it is clear that laurelai and Dorothy are an odd pair one is funny and skeptical while the other seems naive and trusting but they both want happiness have amazing sex appeal and share a strong bond that no man can break the opening scene shows Marilyn and Jane in sparkly outfits already in sync but a bit off Rhythm which doesn’t matter because they look fantastic the movie suggests they will do anything to stay happy and financially secure their friendship is so close and their behavior so sensual that the film can really be seen as a statement on female friendship Independence and sexuality in the film Marilyn Monroe shines as Laura L Lee who is engaged to a Rich Man Named Gus Esmond Jr played by Tommy Nan Gus trusts her but worries about her behavior on the ship he gives her a credit note and asks her not to ruin his family’s reputation laurelai only cares about money believing that while Beauty Fades money ensures happiness she tells Dorothy that worrying about money all the time leaves no room for love laurelai carefully checks the ship’s passenger list to make sure she and Dorothy sit next to the richest people when Dorothy objects laurelai argues that they have different views on happiness because of their experiences laurelai believes focusing on money is practical Dorothy who prefers good looks over wealth still keeps an eye on laurelai when laurelai gets obsessed with a diamond tiara and trouble arises Dorothy steps in to protect her friend even if it means risking her own romance with private detective Ernie Malone played by Elliot Reed the climax of the movie happens on land where Dorthy disguises herself to help laurelai in court she is willing to do anything to save her friend showing How Deeply they care for each other behind the scenes Jane Russell was always punctual and did her own makeup quickly Marilyn Monroe however was a perfectionist and often late after director Howard Hawk band Monroe’s acting co coach from the set Marilyn became nervous Jane took on a big sister role helping Marilyn out of her dressing room to keep things moving this is how their friendship blossomed Marilyn and Jane when Jane Russell worked with Marilyn Monroe she helped calm Marilyn’s nerves and made sure she got to set on time afterward Marilyn joked Jane tried to convert me and I tried to introduce her to Freud Jane believed Marilyn’s troubled past influenced her anxieties this is why Jane felt so strongly about her work with W an organization helping children find stable homes their friendship deepened while filming the 1953 hit Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Jane the more experienced star supported Marilyn whom she called baby doll and Blondie despite their different backgrounds and levels of Fame they bonded over shared experiences and a strong work ethic their first encounter wasn’t on set though Marilyn’s husband introduced them before this Marilyn then known as Norma jeene made a good impression on Jane who remembered her as a pretty girl during filming choreographer Jack Cole tailored dance routines to suit both actress’s Styles Jane admired Marilyn’s dedication she not that Marilyn often stayed late rehearsing even though she earned much less than Jane did despite being the bigger star Jane never saw Marilyn as come competition instead she empathized with Marilyn’s difficult life and tried to help her she invited Marilyn to a Bible study group hoping to provide support through their shared Faith however Marilyn wasn’t interested joking about their differing beliefs despite media attempts to create rivalry between them Jane and Marilyn remained supportive friends they refused to play into those narratives knowing their bond was stronger than any gossip gentlemen for blondes was a success launching Marilyn to stardom despite their busy lives Marilyn and Jane kept in touch sporadically Jane fondly remembered Marilyn during a girl’s weekend shortly before Marilyn’s death wishing she could have shared the laughter with her friend what she says about Marilyn all right let’s dive into the story of Jane Russell and her buddy Marilyn Monroe back in 1985 Jane decided to Spill the Beans about her life in a book called Jane Russell my path and my detours she didn’t hold back sharing juicy details about her time in Hollywood she talked about everything from her run-ins with Howard Hughes and her efforts to help Marilyn find her way spiritually even as Jane got older she stayed true to herself in 2007 she opened up about a meeting with Bobby Kennedy and her doubts about Marilyn’s alleged suicide she had a gut feeling someone else might have had a hand in it perhaps even Bobby himself Jane and Marilyn were like two peas in a pod despite their differences Jane fondly remembered Marilyn as more than just a pretty face she saw her as a shy and sensitive Soul who needed a friend’s support especially when the spotlight got too bright eventually that Spotlight got too bright and Marilyn would take her own life or at least that is the official story Jane didn’t believe that and many others didn’t either there are more theories about Marilyn’s demise than there are stars in the sky but the truth remains elusive tucked away in the shadows of History Hollywood still holds on to the memory of Marilyn mourning her loss now some people flat out reject the idea that Marilyn ended her own life they suspect Foul Play was at play many claim Bobby Kennedy might have had a hand in Marilyn’s demise this Theory suggests that he wanted to silence her to protect his own own and his brother’s political careers but Bobby’s Camp vehemently denies these allegations after Marilyn’s untimely exit Hollywood and the world were in shock many were not just sad but also angry pointing fingers at the movie industry and its treatment of stars sir Lawrence Olivier believed Marilyn was merely a pawn in Hollywood’s big game while director Josh Logan felt she never received the recognition she deserved from what Jane wrote in her book and and how she talked about her friend it seems like she also shared these sentiments final days Jane made her home in the Serene Santa Maria Valley nestled along 1. Marilyn Monroe was fantastic…a really admirable person. Unfortunately the predators were even worse in those days and, I'm sure, were hellbent upon using and abusing women like Marilyn to the max. Poor Marilyn, she was deeply let down by many.

  2. I think Jane used to sing in Santa Maria, California. This lady is just that, a lady who calls the shots as she sees them. Loved her. I went to college in North Dakota and went to Jane's home town many times. She is like the people I met in ND and Minnesota..down to earth and hard workers. As a woman, I know we influence our futures by how we allow others to treat us. Jane was her own woman, hence her strength. What a lovely person she grew into. Maria Ouspenkaya was an excellent actress and she taught Jane well.

  3. Speaking of "the big boys", check out mister shirtless in the tight shorts on the left (0:09), don't blink or you'll miss it! She wasn't kidding! Sometimes you just wish you were a punching bag, I swear.

  4. Silver Screen Goddesses is the proper definition of Jane Russell and Marylin Monroe, sexy to sky-high level, ironic, intelligent, talented and very very beautiful. I m glad they have acted together…
