it mechanic Resurrection is the 2016 sequel to the 2011 action film the mechanic which itself is the remake of the 1972 movie of the same name Jason Statham returns as the Assassin Arthur Bishop who is forced to perform three seemingly impossible eliminations in order to free his captive girlfriend Gina Jessica Alba the film’s cast also includes Jessica Alba Sam hazeldine Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle yo mechanic Resurrection hits the ground running getting Stam into a great fight scene within the first 10 minutes stam’s best fights are the ones where he utilizes his surroundings and this time he’s at an outdoor restaurant in Rio de Janeiro so it isn’t long before tables are being flipped knives are being thrown and flaming hot grills are barbecuing bad guys this is why staffen is such a breath of fresh air these days nobody else really does this kind of action anymore especially with the style and Screen presence he exhibits as the movie goes on the action rarely lets up with more fist fights and shootouts interspersed with some of Bishop’s patented kills where he makes his hits look like accidents above all action movies need to be fun and mechanic Resurrection had me smiling throughout as far as the plot goes well mechanic Resurrection is a bit of a mixed bag I like parts of it the villain being a figure from Bishop’s past makes sense given the Great Lengths to which he goes to draw a Bishop into his scheme less successful is how Gina the Jessica Alba character fits into things she runs a medical relief teaching program for impoverished kids and the villain tells her he’ll sell her kids into slavery if she doesn’t manipulate Bishop into falling in love with her then get kidnapped by the bad guys so Bishop will complete the hits in return for her release um what this is the easiest way to secure Bishop’s cooperation why pick some random Aid worker why not a prostitute you know someone specifically skilled in The Art of Seduction for that matter why not just kidnap Michelle Yu’s character I’m sure Bishop wouldn’t leave her to die either however Alba is actually pretty good in her early scenes and when she and Bishop fall for each other it feels genuine if rushed I don’t buy that there is a fairy tale romance but I believe he wouldn’t let some evil gangsters kill her I also thought it was a neat twist to get her deception out of the way early so they didn’t drop it like a bomb halfway through and make us question whether Bishop would abandon her for a while I wondered if it would turn out her story about being kidnapped was itself a cover and she was really just working for the villain which would have made more sense but not so much then there are the hits the first one is fun and inventive with Bishop having to disguise himself as a wanted criminal so he can be sent to the same prison as an African warlord who says he plans on conquering all of Africa which good luck with that and poison him from behind bars I like this whole sequence quite a bit it shows Bishop’s tradecraft and the meticulous detail that goes into planning a hit that looks like an accident however it strikes me that if the warlord was simply stabbed to death in prison this would be considered a common enough occurrence that no one would ask too many questions this guy in particular has another prisoner who wants him dead because the warlord killed his brother in fact Bishop actually has to save the warlord’s life so he can later kill him under more mysterious circumstances it’s very cool and the suspense is held up admirably but it still feels like wasted effort the second is the one that starts off the trailer where Bishop suctions under that pool that hangs off the side of a building and cracks the glass underneath so the guy falls 70 stories to his death don’t worry we’re assured he made his fortune in sex trafficking again the visuals and forgive me mechanics of the hit are very interesting and it’s another fun sequence but why would anyone ever have a pool like that it makes absolutely no sense even if we’re suspending disbelief in which I’m a big believer even if he weren’t on Bishop’s hit list I would think any rational person would be afraid of the pool eventually cracking it’s forgivable because it’s a neat moment but the leaps and logic do add up after a while the villain himself crane Sam hazeldine is okay I like his backstory and the way he’s tied to Bishop but he’s mostly there to sneer at threaten and ultimately get killed by Jason Statham to that end he’s fine and I like the Thematic symmetry of his come upin Michelle yo has a thankless role that could have been played by anyone Tommy Lee Jones is barely in the film which is the biggest disappointment I had visions of going into action with Stam but instead he just allows staum to fake his death then disappears until the end to provide some visual Exposition I don’t think he even has five full minutes of screen time he does have a couple of funny lines oh hopefully somewhere down the road he can be better utilized Maybe by playing a villain worthy of Statham my biggest worry when mechanic Resurrection was announced was the change in directors from Simon West Conair Expendables to the General’s daughter the highly underrated wild card to relatively unknown German filmmaker Dennis gansel luckily gansel handles the action well with no shaky Cam and very fluid movement the action is fast but coherent and it makes for a very entertaining movie when the deceitful actions of a cunning but beautiful woman named Gina Jessica Alba force him to return to the life he left behind ARA Bishop’s Jason staffen life is in danger as he has to complete an impossible list of assassinations of the most dangerous men in the world my experience of Jason Statham in action films at least because I loved him in spy has been limited to only the transporter series that experience does not include the previous mechanic film which itself was a remake to a 1972 film that I haven’t seen either don’t worry if you haven’t seen the previous film because most people didn’t as you should have no problem with this one even if you haven’t seen it you probably already saw it in one form or another Arthur Bishop staffen thought he had gotten away from his assassin past but when a beautiful woman in distress comes along in Gina Alba she forces him back once she is taken by a group of dangerous men led by a man named crane Sam hazeldine with whom Bishop has passed history history in order to get her back Bishop must perform a series of assassinations all around the world what was special about these assassinations were that they had to be accidents the beginning was when the plot fell apart things never seem to make much sense and Snowboard from there suffice it to say that this film requires a lot of suspension of belief in order to enjoy it this fact did not really come as much of a surprise this wasn’t all always possible however as practical aspects of the film were decent like the fight choreography but most of the film’s special effects was hard to take the film relied heavily on CGI during action sequences which is okay in general but since they were so terrible here they distracted from what was happening on screen the story itself wasn’t overly original and was another cliched Revenge Story the plot wasn’t exactly that interesting and was more on the Bland side but many people probably won’t care since it’s just an excuse to see STA and beat people up and he beat up a lot of people here it seemed like he was facing an endless lineup of stupid henchmen the fact that it was so easy for him made things less exciting with the novelty of it going away pretty fast again people will probably not care about this but there should be more purpose to what was happening watching Bishop plan his various assassinations was kind of exciting and he was kind of ingenious as a character but that’s not saying much compared to everyone else around him some of the things he was able to do here defied belief which was also not much of a surprise considering how the rest of the film went this added to the Allure of the character besides Bishop there wasn’t much to any of the other characters as they were all rather one-dimensional Gina served little purpose and her relationship with Bishop felt forced and lacked chemistry crane was a boring and cliché villain the acting was okay with staffen being exactly what you would expect here in a role that was never a stretch for him he didn’t really need to act too much here as he mostly just beat a lot of people up Alba was not that great as Gina but she didn’t have much to do she was the cliche female and distress and had no chemistry with Statham which made their scenes almost cringeworthy Michelle yo was wasted as one of Bishop’s old friends named May Tommy Lee Jones was also criminally wasted as one of Bishop’s assassination targets he was a little fun playing a much different role than usual his screen time was much less than the trailers implied overall this was a bad action film with a silly plot bad special effects a okay action and okay performances mechanic Resurrection is the sequel to the 2011 film that I actually quite enjoyed this one once again Stars Jason Statham as the professional killer who can make anything look like an accident this sequel adds Jessica Alba as well as Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle yo kind of this story again follows Hitman Arthur Bishop who has been enjoying his retirement until an enemy from his past kidnaps the love of his life that he met the day before and forces him to complete three difficult contracts in exchange for her life now if that synopsis and the fact that the word Resurrection are in the title are not enough to warn you of what you are getting into with this film The ridiculously over-the-top opening sequence surely will this sequel follows a story we have seen many times and one we will see for years to come it’s extremely predictable does little to grab your attention but is enough to keep your interest if you are looking for some mindless action this film has is all the cliche love interest cheesy performances cut and paste dialogue a cardboard villain and a paint by numbers plot but it still serves its purpose as a film that Teeters on being so bad it’s good well not good but serviceable for something you want to put on while you are doing something actually productive Jason Statham had his moments he pulls off the action sequences in all their Splendor and with many wild tasks forced on his character there is some fun to be had he does feel mildly lifeless in the non-action scenes however not being able to mask the fact even he knew the dialogue was terrible Jessica Alba was there didn’t really make the most of the role and while she does give effort the result was what you would expect given the material she had to work with the chemistry between Alba and Statham was Bland and did little to sell their love Dynamic the things this film have going for it is many colorful International locations loads of shallow action and all the textbooks Statham ask kicking another thing it has in its favor is what I call its cheese Factor something this film has tons of the sequences are so over the top it borders unintentional as does some of the television grades special effects the scenes bring laughs as Statham is diving onto a paraglider unloading a clip as he is falling backwards in slow motion or sliding down the face of a building added with a overly forced musical score and the result is something from the80s era of action romps minus some charisma overall mechanic Resurrection is bad enough to make a laugh watching it and making fun of it while still enjoying some of it despite the lack of ambition in every other aspect of its creation Michelle Y and Tommy Lee Jones were wasted but even more screen time from them would not have made this much better about halfway through the idiotic dumbness that is mechanic Resurrection the unasked for sequel to The bit of unthinking nihilism and misogyny that was 2011’s the mechanic I found myself drifting into a feminist revery what if I imagined fancying myself in a better smarter kind of world Jessica Alber Gina here with the Mastermind pulling all the strings behind the scenes What If instead of the Damsel in Distress she appears to be she is in fact manipulating all the overgrown boys with guns who get off on throwing violent Tantrums twisting them so that instead of spewing their deep rooted anger and otherwise unexpressed self-hatred outward at innocence they turned it on one another for the benefit of increasing the overall happiness of the world I mean I thought this almost has to be the case Gina is way over playing the lady Fair she actually faints into the arms of Jason Statham’s professional killer Arthur Bishop when he rescues her well the first time he rescues her there will be others though my fantasy Theory doesn’t quite jive with how events eventually resolve themselves I am going to cling to this idea because it makes the movie so much better than what is actually on the screen which is an absurd often laughably inep weed assemblage of cheap and cheesy green screen FS as backdrops for shootouts and punch-ups with Anonymous armies of Canon fodder That 80s action movies starring martial artists long ago made redundant Resurrection is directed by Dennis gansel yet another white male filmmaker handed the Reigns of a big budget Studio action flick even though he has no track record with such while female filmmakers with track records cannot get work and it shows Resurrection is supposed to be intense and gritty but it’s just silly unless it’s secretly all about how Gina Alba Entourage barely lethal is ridding the world of its most notorious arms dealers it’s it’s actually the only good explanation for why the character of Gina exists in the movie at all see crane Sam Hazel Dean the Huntsman Winters War Grimsby an old acquaintance of Bishops who is very bad indeed wants to eliminate his Rivals Krill femi aluu Jr the legend of 19 cook Toby Edington and Adams Tommy Lee Jones Jason Bourne Hope Springs did you know that there’s a handy on online chart that breaks down the global market share for nefarious underworld arms dealers it’s colorcoded and everything sad the war dogs guys haven’t made it onto it yet the fact that these are literally the worst people in the world hobbies include turning kids into soldiers and the sex trafficking of children infinitely worse than being a lone wolf freelance assassin like Bishop apparently wasn’t considered justification Enough by the movie for him to take on the J for Crane even though Bishop Statham furious seven spy has what should be sufficient personal interest to do so I was an orphan I was sold to an East End gangster I’m pretty sure the movie didn’t intend for us to laugh at this no screenwriters Philip Shelby Survivor and Tony mosha seemed to believe that there was only one way that Bishop could be prodded into killing those three men reluctantly under great duress even though he’s like the mver of Assassins and seems to love his work crane had to kidnap Gina and threaten to kill all the kids at the pnom pen shelter she runs for former victims of child sex trafficking unless she agreed to entrap Bishop the idea was that Bishop would instantly fall in love with her seriously she is like a smoking hot Mother Teresa so who wouldn’t and then crane could kidnap her again take her away from Bishop and keep threatening to kill her until Bishop finishes the three killings it doesn’t quite go to Crane’s plan of course not it’s going to Gina’s plan obviously though it skips over the bit about how Gina manipulated crane into kidnapping her I bet it was brilliant though what we see on screen is apparently Gina becoming almost instantly genuinely smitten with Bishop but clearly she is faking she must be because as a no will do good her she is actually repulsed by a professional killer like Bishop not Charmed by him but if she can get him to wipe out the very men who hurt her shelter kids in the first place and other men like him the world will be a much better place bonus Bishop keeps promising to kill crane too just on principle so one more dead bad guy who can’t hurt people anymore so much that is seemingly stupid in this movie makes sense if Gina is behind it all like how after telling her tale of geopolitical horror and abused children to Bishop she can go for a nice relaxing sexy swim she’s not worried about anything she is in fact relieved that he has bought her so story about needing to be lady saved by a big strong Brave man but Gina has even more surprising talents she might actually be a witch like a proper Harry Potter witch who can do magic it’s the only way to account for how Bishop is able to carry out his Globe hopping assassinations on such tight deadlines first he’s got 36 hours to get from Bangkok to Sydney to kill cook and like at least a third of that is eaten up by travel time alone then he’s got only 24 hours to get from Sydney to Vana Bulgaria to off Adams and 24 hours is almost exactly as long as it takes to make that trip at a minimum I would say that Gina might have given him her Mye grer tytin Turner except that would give away Gina’s game so she is somehow manipulating not only petulant tantrum throwing Manchild but time itself all from the comfort of her captivity on Crane’s yacht she arranges for Bishop to come across shark repellent cream at a Street Market just when he’s going to need it if only Blake Lively had known about this stuff in the shallows she enables him to make a replica of a key from only a photo of it actually that’s possible this has been a public safety announcement from Gina who loves you please don’t post photos of your keys on Facebook oh and somehow she also teleports Bishop into a place he couldn’t possibly have gotten into the safe room in Adams’s heavily fortified villains Lair without Bishop even realizing she’s done it director Dennis gansel and his crew deliver a film that has the look and feel of firste film students who’ve bitten off a bit more than they can chew besides wondering how Jessica Alba wound up in mechanic Resurrection the next biggest question audiences will ask is how on Earth did Tommy Lee Jones wind up in it as well the answer to this may never truly be known but it’s not hard to imagine money was in there somewhere one of the few positive points about mechanic Resurrection is that you don’t need to have seen the first film to watch it the film’s opening sequence apart from some very sloppy green screen work is pretty entertaining and plays like a 1970s Bond pre-edit sequence with a shitload more testosterone it would not have been a surprise if a Trent rnor Atticus Ross inspired version of Nobody Does it Better started playing when Bishop sails off into the sunset and the title card crashes onto the screen to tell everyone their watching yep you guessed it mechanic Resurrection no sooner has Bishop evaded a goon squad in Brazil he’s pulling up on a remote Thailand Island vaguely reminiscent of the island chain where Roger Moore and Christopher Lee pistol dled in a Man with the Golden Gun as our poor man’s James Bond arrives Michelle Yos May is there to hassle him about whatever he needs hustling about Bishop however is like a perennial Boy Scout he’s always prepared with Hightech Computing equipment guns passports and money if you’re annoyed that you haven’t got the mbn yet you’ll be downright filthy that Bishop can get high-speed wireless internet in the middle of the ocean no sooner has he settled into Island life the gorgeous Jessica Alba pops out from behind a palm tree in a smart two-piece bikini that cover only the bare necessities it turns out that her character Gina is being used by Bishop’s arch nemesis crane the sneering Sam hazeldine British who looks like sha Bean on the paleo diet she can’t help being a stuge otherwise the bad guy is going to kill all the kids she teaches at a local Village Bishop being the warm cuddly guy he is Falls head over heels for her only to have more goons arrive and snatch her away cue the Jeopardy somewhere inside mechanic Resurrection is a story waiting to happen unfortunately the screenplay is so slipshod that it’s never made clear why crane chose Gina to do a snow job on Bishop there’s also the grossly convoluted plotting to do with some plan to take over the world’s ilicit arms trading supposedly the reason for Bishop being useful in the first place then there’s hero SL anti-hero Bishop’s three targets are all meant to takeen out with a minimum of fuss but the guy sure knows how to draw attention to his actions as the first two assassinations become newsworthy events Philip Shelby and Tony moser’s script though is not the only problem who needs narrative logic when you’ve Luke besson’s money financing your future film mechanic Resurrection is the worst looking film to be released in a very long time some shots are not just out of focus they don’t look like they were ever intended to be in FOC focused shot composition literally goes out the window on a number of occasions and the camera fails to follow the action at Key moments director gansel and cinematographer Daniel gotop display little flare for their material and struggle with getting the most basic scenes captured without making a mess of them fortunately through all of this Statham and Alba Soler on doing the best they can with what they’re surrounded by presumed dead Hitman AK mechanic Arthur Bishop Jason Statham is about to be called out of retirement when his past catches up with him in Brazil a messenger greets him at his favorite watering Hall trying to blackmail him into killing three men in exchange for not revealing his secret he refuses a fight breaks out and Bishop manages to escape to a small island resort in Thailand run by his friend May Michelle yo while hiding out on the island Bishop discovers that the woman in Brazil works for an old acquaintance of his Rya crane Sam hazeldine at about the same time another attractive woman arrives on the island Gina Thorn Jessica Alba an apparent victim of domestic abuse when Gina’s boyfriend Frank gets drunk and starts attacking her on their boat May asks Bishop to come to her rescue Bishop arrives and kills Frank in the process and this is where mechanic Resurrection goes completely off the rails and logic Gina was a plant by crane to get Bishop to fall in love with Gina after rescuing her from Frank’s violent attacks in which his goons would come and kidnap Gina in exchange for killing the same three men he refused to do back in Brazil Gina is being blackmailed to go through with this in order to save the lives of her workers and refugees at her shelter for human trafficking victims in Cambodia so guess what happens Bishop falls in love with Gina Gina gets kidnapped by Crane’s goons and the ransom is killing three men and making the deaths look like accidents what follows are a series of stunt set pieces directed as a second unit by Vic Armstrong that are interesting to watch but not exactly original the first involves taking out an African War Lord in a high security prison on a remote island in Malaysia the second is a child traffic who goes for a swim at the same time each day in his Penthouse pool that literally overlooks the city of Sydney Australia in a scene that is reminiscent of Tom Cruz climbing up a skyscraper in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol the third is ludicrous taking out weapons dealer Max Adams tommmy Lee Jones who resides in a high security Monument to Communism in Bulgaria instead of taking out Adams Bishop partners with him to devise a plan of rescue ing Gina and talking out crane the performances are about what one would expect from a movie of this sort the highlights being Alba and yo who actually have some emotions to show staffen portrays Bishop as a cold and ruthless killer Tommy Lee Jones who only appears in a handful of scenes despite being Bill third above the line is a waste of talent as Adams who doesn’t have much to do in the small amount of screen time afforded to him I found this sequel to be much better than its predecessor but that’s not saying much mechanic Resurrection was captured digitally with red and a cameras I swear I saw an AR in one of the featurettes and looked surprisingly good in 4k oud with HDR in some cases it looks too good as it is very obvious that several sequences were filmed in front of a blue or green screen on a Sound Stage rather than on location the opening rest restaurant sequence is a glaring example as the image goes very soft around the edges whenever the skyline is visible something one tends to see a lot on episodic television such as bones and Agents of Shield on the other hand colors do pop when compared to the 1080p Blu-ray especially the sequences on Mae Island Resort fine detail is quite good overall revealing stubble growth in Statham’s beard for example contrast is improved with slightly darker black levels over the Blu-ray providing better Shadow detail mechanic Resurrection contains a very immersive Dolby Atmos track with Dolby trueid 7.1 core even when played back on a non Atmos system in a 5.1 configuration with additional front height speakers and Pro logic is enabled helicopters paragliders ocean liners Etc pans seamlessly from one end of the room to another the heights even make good use of Crane’s instructional narration to Bishop as he moves on to the next assignment Mark isham’s score is used effectively to also immerse the audience in the action while dialogue is clear and doesn’t get overwhelmed in the mix the first movie was a remake of the classic 1972 Charles Bronson Thriller starring Jason Statham and was reasonably acceptable to remake I guess of course they then got got carried away as always happens and thought it would be a good idea to make a sequel to said remake of the original 1972 classic now everyone knows this would all end in tears and complete failure except the makers of this movie it seems so once again we have yet another movie all about a super agent type bloke that is virtually invincible and that’s about it Bishop Statham is now living in Brazil after faking his death in the last movie he is approached by some bad guys who work for another bad guy crane played by some bloke called Sam hazeldine who wants Bishop to kill three specific people Bishop refuses a fight breaks out Bishop wins and escapes Bishop is now living in Thailand as you do when he rescues a sexy blonde Jessica Alba from some drunk bloke turns out she has been blackmailed by crane to meet up with bishop and seduce him so crane could then fake her kidnapping so he would carry out the hit well low and behold in time bishop and Gina Albert do fall through each other and low and behold Crane’s goons turn up and kidnap them both now Bishop must carry out the three hits to save his new girlfriend ZZ ZZ seriously could this be any more cliched and predictable who wrote this how did they even get paid for this unoriginal tribe how did this even get a green light for f asterisk CK’s sake for starters this doesn’t feel like an action flick oh no this feels more like a holiday destination video the camera work is honesty stunning Thailand Rio Sydney Malaysia Etc all look beautiful wonderful if you’re watching this on a good TV in 1080P 2K 4K or whatever then these exotic locations will burst through your screen into your living room in bright sharp crisp Vivid colors I lost all interest in the film’s plot and was more interested in the possibility of going to one of these places for my next holiday what’s more all the scenes on the beach in Thailand are enough to make you sick the most perfect beaches you’ve ever seen in your life the most perfect weather and everyone in shart is tanned and beautiful with the exception of staffen perhaps what actually happens in the movie is of course ridiculous and crap but that really shouldn’t be any surprise for Bishop’s first hit he must infiltrate a prison in Malaysia well get himself locked up he does this by acting drunk and being a bit rude to a Malaysian cop apparently this is enough to get you banged up in this horrendous Maximum Security Prison that looks like it holds the type of people that have eaten someone all these hits have to look like accidents by the way as you can guess this doesn’t really seem to happen in my opinion pretty sure the first hit would look like someone strangled and suffocated the guy because that’s what he did the second hit is what you see on the movie’s poster it involves Bishop having to scale the outside of a skyscraper in order to break a glass bottom swimming pool that overhangs the building in all honesty this is probably the best part of the movie because you see a lot of technical Hitman type jiggery pokery as Bishop works out how to make it look like an accident and then how he manages to scale the outside of the building but Tom Cruz this ain’t it’s all green screen and CGI once again the hit goes without a flaw but I’m pretty sure the guy could have gotten out of the pool in time in between all these Bishop does try to rescue Gina from Crane’s super Posh yacht out at Sea he locates the yacht gets on board and manages to wipe out a good number of faceless henchmen alas he is eventually caught given a good slap with some verbal from Crane and then sent on his merry way to carry out hit number three so basically this entire rescue sequence was completely and utterly pointless filler that didn’t amount to anything the last stage on this video game Escapade sees Bishop going up against arms dealer Max Adams played by a very old Tommy Lee Jones in order to make Jones look somewhat hip and trendy he wears bizarre clothing some stupid colored circular glasses and has some earrings but because Jones is an Alys star they can’t just have him killed off so he teams up with Statham’s Bishop to take on crane this naturally leads to the big final showdown on Crane’s poshh where Bishop this time wipes out all of the faceless henchmen and spoilers kills crane he does this without really breaking sweat or taking any injuries because he’s got his invincibility cheek code switch on you want to see a oneman army situation well it doesn’t get much more oneman army than this Kola I think you got to be a hardcore Jason Statham fan for this one don’t get me wrong I enjoy a good action flick and I’ve got nothing against staffen but the man makes the same over and over and over again he’s becoming the new Steven seagull but with bigger budget flicks every damn movie he makes he’s either Special Forces or an undercover super agent or an ex Special Forces SL exmilitary SLX super cop or whatever with super martial arts skills of course I mean honesty did the movie really need to take place in exotic locations across the globe or was that just the excuse to enable everyone to get a super extravagant holiday that’s all paid for plus you get a wage and you can call it work 5 years after his appar death Hitman Arthur Bishop is forced back into the deadly game he left in this action packed sequel having retired by faking his death Arthur Bishop is now living a quiet life in Brazil one night at his favorite restaurant he comes across Renee Tran a messenger who knows Bishop’s identity and confronts him he is asked to perform three assassinations he refuses and after using his skills to Escape Renee and some thugs Arthur heads to a small Cove on the beaches of Thailand where he meets longtime friend May when Arthur sees Gina Thornton an ex-military operative turned orphanage teacher he learns Gina was part of a setup that was meant for Bishop in order for him to be forced to commit the assassinations The Mastermind is Ria crane a notorious arms dealer with ties to Bishop that dates back too when they were orphans together crane blames Bishop when as kids Bishop escaped the clutches of the gangster who raised them to be child soldiers when crane kidnaps Gina Bishop soon finds he has no other choice but to do what he longer wanted to do will Bishop be able to go back to his old ways as a means to save Gina or will he have other plans that can perhaps save both himself and Gina from the deadly clutches of crane in 2011 Jason Statham starred in the remake of the classic 1972 Charles Bronson film The Mechanic one would have never imagined that there would be a sequel as the original was a one-off itself however Statham is still a name and the first was a hit at the box office so it was inevitable that there would be a followup and it’s pretty much a run of the mil action thriller that thanks to Statham makes this film watchable Stam brings that old school mentality as Bishop now retired and doing quite well until he is forced back into the world of assassination even if an action film is a run-of the- mill with a story that has been done to death for one reason or another Jason staffen is exactly the one who can still make them watchable Statham shines again especially when he is unleashing all sorts of chaos when blowing away villains or beating the heck out of them with his martial arts skills while Jessica Alber Gina may serve as is a damsel in distress her character being ex-military doeses allow her to show some limited form of action all because Gina cares about the orphans in Cambodia that she takes care of don’t expect Michelle yo to throw fistcuffs in this film she is seen in the First Act in a non-action role as May a bar owner who is the closest to being an ally for Statham she can be said to be a sage likee figure as her character has a history with Bishop but not in the manner one would think Sam hazeldine brings smugness to the role of villain Rya crane who seeks revenge for history with bishop and plans to make him his own personal assassin in the world of arms dealing one of the drug dealers is played with amazing comic Panache by Tommy Lee Jones who looks like an Elton John celebrity impersonator with his eclectic look this is perhaps his funniest look and role since 1995’s Batman Forever which is clear that Jones was having fun with his role as two-c like in Batman Forever Jones is truly having fun with the role mechanic Resurrection is a wild ride of a sequel with Jason staffan driving a run-of-the-mill action film that rises a bit Above the Rest due in part to Tommy Lee Jones obvious fun role if you like the original you might just like this sequel there are two ways to handle sequels either continue story lines that were unresolved in the previous film or start a whole new storyline however if a sequel opts for the latter then it needs to treat the new story with the same care and attention that the previous film offered taking pains to set up histories relationships motivations and more it’s not enough to Simply take for granted that since audiences are already familiar with the protagonist that they’ll accept the new bad guy or the hero ‘s new squeeze mechanic Resurrection makes precisely that mistake and assumes that necessary story foundations can be done away with and still present a satisfying film regrettably the filmmakers are wrong Arthur Bishop Jason Statham is living and hiding in Rio after he faked his death in the previous film despite his efforts to remain anonymous Bishop is approached by a mysterious woman who wants to hire his services for her boss a man named crane Sam hazeldine and she makes it clear that Bishop can’t refuse but he does and he makes a daring escape to Thailand while investigating crane Bishop meets Gina Jessica Alba who is having trouble with her abusive boyfriend Bishop rescues Gina but suspects her as a tool of crane to get Bishop to do Crane’s bidding despite that concern they fall in love and and crane nabs Gina and threatens to kill her unless Bishop executes three specific men and makes their deaths look accidental Bishop has no choice but to carry out the mission Jason Statham has a singular brand as Hollywood’s last dedicated Action Hero whether it’s driving at break neck speeds or just breaking necks Statham is the actor for all of your action needs as such it’s disappointing that the projects he’s getting aren’t Contin continually elevating his brand mechanic Resurrection is action oriented but it doesn’t offer anything that audiences haven’t seen before and even if one argues that nothing new exists in the world of action then the other failing is that the film doesn’t offer action at a consistently high level the opening sequence is promising with staffen showing off some unexpected moves like pummeling a woman in the face with a table or shoving a man’s face into a lit barbecue you but after that the action becomes more mundane with standard shooting and takedowns the action isn’t bad it just feels routine and Bishop never feels challenged throughout the film even when he squares off against the main villain the relationship with Gina as the love of Bishop’s life is shoehorned into the film while the first film had some heart with Ben Foster as the son of one of Bishop’s victims Alba’s Gina just feels like a mataffin to get Bishop moving typically that’s fine but the film spends so much time building a background for Gina and a clever way to insert her into Bishop’s life that one would expect that Gina would feel more organic to the story at least Ben Foster’s character had some kind of relationship with Bishop Gina is just some pretty girl that’s coerced into luring Bishop into the Trap why did crane choose her an obscure woman in Cambodia when there are other pretty faces that are probably easier to get to the structure of the story is the biggest dragon mechanic Resurrection it really should have begun by focusing on the villain Crane and his history with Bishop that way audiences don’t have to watch Bishop explain in dialogue who crane is to him instead the film shows the audience then in the present day crane could run into a problem with the three men he needs killed he doesn’t have the skill to do it himself so he has to hire Bishop knowing that Bishop wouldn’t help freely crane could send his own girlfriend to win Bishop’s affections and then kidnap her instead of the humanitarian worker angle that the current plot offers when Bishop returns to rescue Gina only to discover that she’s a bad guy perhaps Gina could have actually fallen in love with bishop and help him defeat crane maybe even sacrificing herself in the Pro process that would have been far more satisfying than what audiences get which is a prototypical action movie with bad guys who don’t behave believably it’s also worth noting that the R rating is more of a gimmick than anything else a lot of people get shot and there’s a little blood spatter but it’s hardly visceral even when grenades blow up right next to people there’s no Gore this criticism also extends to the sex scene between staff and in Alba they’re both almost fully clothed and don’t touch anything beyond each other’s butts in a modern society where actual film sex is usually viewed alone this PG attempt is just embarrassing to watch as a group if a film won’t give audiences the goods then it should just do a tasteful Fade Out and fade in to the next day with the couple waking up next to each other there’s a stint in the middle of mechanic Resurrection where you finally start to understand why two writers Philip Shelby Tony Moser four producers John Thompson Robert Earl David Winkler William chartoff and a director Dennis gansel have worked tirelessly to make a sequel to a film that no one really wanted it doesn’t last that long after Arthur Bishop Jason staff’s new girlfriend Gina Jessica Alba who he has literally known for Less Than 3 days is kidnapped the former Hitman is forced to come out of retirement to complete three impossible assassinations which he also must make look like accidents otherwise she will be killed by villain Rya crane Sam hazeldine watching Stam meticulously plan out and then get inside Thailand’s impenetrable prison murder its most famous inmate and then quickly Escape before he then has to do the same in Sydney Australia to a multi-millionaire in a luxurious but once again and heavily guarded Penthouse highrise in the middle of the city is just plain old fun these scenes are well constructed paced and built in an entertaining and ultimately satisfying manner that just about make the previous blatant inadequacies of mechanic Resurrection forgivable it also helps that Jason Statham is able to sell each of these sequences so well in fact watching Statham in mechanic Resurrection made me think of a sequence in Peter bogdanovich’s documentary on John Ford directed by John Ford in this John Wayne recalls some Sterling advice that the legendary director gave to the young actor as he informed him Duke you’re going to get a lot of scenes in your life they’re going to seem corny to you play them play them to the hilt you’ll get by with it that pretty much sums up why Jason Statham has been a Mainstay in the action genre for the last 4 years as there’s always a palpable intensity and professionalism to his performances that means he’s able to make even the most outlandish and outrageous action sequence just about believable because of his physique and Agility you believe that he’s fearless and could easily eliminate anyone that he has his eye on while because of his Cockney accent and innate calmness he’s able to convince you that he’s as smart as a whip and able to improvise and think on his feet too the problem comes when he opens his mouth especially considering the Diabolical dialogue plot relationships and conflicts that Jason Statham has to sell in mechanic Resurrection despite mechanic resurrections deviation into entertainment when we get to see Arthur Bishop working wonders it’s unfortunately bookmarked by lackluster opening and closing acts that soften the impact of your enjoyment during this time first of all it’s tedious and painful to see Jessica Alba and Jason Statham’s relationship grow as the pair fail to produce one spark of romance between the pair of them they are even tied together at one point to forcibly create camaraderie the pair are not helped by sycophantic PNE Direction and writing during this time which includes overly dramatic Tor Back stories swells of emotional music and even a sex scene Montage that feels like it’s been ripped straight from the room it’s a welcome relief when Jessica Alba is actually kidnapped then after mechanic Resurrection has redeemed itself it sadly resorts to loud commonplace ill planned out action scene for its finale which even the random appearance of Tommy Lee Jones as an arms dealer dressed like a biker hippie hybrid from the future K Salvage well he does a little but it’s like running into your granddad on a sinking ship you know you’re about to go through something bad you’re just glad TJ is there to hold your hand through it all since the original only grossed $62 million from a $40 million budget after average reviews it’s hard to know why a mechanic Resurrection was green lit in the first place sure it’s not a complete waste of your time but after sitting through it for 99 minutes it’s so obviously average and only ever so slightly enjoyable that I’m still and probably always will be none the wiser for its creation wait this movie is actually a sequel there was a movie named the mechanic you see that is the problem of Jason staff and movies they are thoroughly enjoyable women love the manly characters he plays men wish to be the manly characters he plays but they are also of the same mold can anyone articulate the difference between 2002’s the transporter and the two sequels that followed in 2005 and 2008 for that matter 26’s crank and 29’s crank high voltage for that matter 2008’s the bank job and 2013’s hummingbird they all have staff and portraying anti-heroes with a handsomely sculpted Bard nonetheless fighting off baddies by performing his own stunts the plot air they don’t really matter the 49-year-old conveniently takes on yet another similar role in mechanic Resurrection okay if you must know it is a sequel to a 2011 movie which was a remake of a 1972 film of the same name and impresses viewers by well fighting off baddies in intense and over-the-top action scenes yep viewers will also be treated to scenes of the English actor showing off his handsomely sculpted bod Dennis gansel Helms this action thriller with a screenplay written by Philip Shelby and Tony marha you wonder why two writers are involved when the movie simply involves Arthur Bishop Statham who chooses to live his life quietly after faking his death in the fist movie is forced to return to the world of crime by killing three targets and staging them as accidents the 99-minute movie brings viewers on a no- break a globe trotting adventure to Thailand Penang Sydney Rio de Janero and Bulgaria if you have been agreeable to Statham’s previous movies you will be able to sit through this one without too many complaints you will get your share of close combat sequences which are to be fair engagingly edited as described earlier women will love this manliness and men will wish that they are this manly these are shamelessly enjoyable guilty pleasures which will draw fans of action movies into the theaters the other reason why men may love this movie is the presence of Jessica Alba remember the good old days when she boogied her way into men’s hearts in Honey 23 hypnotized men as exotic dancer Nancy Callahan in Sim City 2005 wore sexy bikinis in Into the Blue 2005 and remain sensationally attractive as Su storm in Fantastic 4 2005 the 35-year-old actress still has the goods and sure knows how to flaunt them for that you even forgive the laughably awkward sex scene between her and staffan another notable addition to the sequel is Michelle yo who is ridiculously wasted in a role that only requires her to look wise and spout intelligent lines who else better to portray this than an Asian character did you really need someone to say those are best at killing are also the best at healing what seems to be lacking is only a crystal ball for her to gaze into Tommy Lee Jones looking as cranky as ever in his earrings tiny sunglasses and colorful shirts rounds up the cast as a baddy who well gives Stam a reason to pave the way for another possible sequel Resurrection is the 2016 sequel to the 2011 action film the mechanic which itself is the remake of the 1972 movie of the same name Jason staffen returns as the Assassin Arthur Bishop who is forced to perform three seemingly impossible eliminations in order to free his captive girlfriend Gina Jessica Alba the film’s cast also includes Jessica Alba Sam hazeldine Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle yo mechanic Resurrection hits the ground running getting Statham into a great fight scene within the first 10 minutes Statham’s best fights are the ones where he utilizes his surroundings and this time he’s at an outdoor restaurant in Rio de Janeiro so it isn’t long before tables are being flipped knives are being thrown and flaming hot grills are barbecuing bad guys this is why staum is such a breath of fresh air these days nobody else really does this kind of action anymore especially with the style and Screen presence he exhibits as the movie goes on the action r lets up with more fist fights and shootouts interspersed with some of Bishop’s patented kills where he makes his hits look like accidents above all action movies need to be fun and mechanic Resurrection had me smiling throughout as far as the plot goes well mechanic Resurrection is a bit of a mixed bag I like parts of it the villain being a figure from Bishop’s past makes sense given the Great lengths to which he goes to draw Bishop into his scheme less successful is how Gina the Jessica Alba character fits into things she runs a medical relief teaching program for impoverished kids and the villain tells her he’ll sell her kids into slavery if she doesn’t manipulate Bishop into falling in love with her then get kidnapped by the bad guys so Bishop will complete the hits in return for her release um what this is the easiest way to secure Bishop’s cooperation why pick some random Aid worker why not a prostitute you know someone specifically skilled in The Art of Seduction for that matter why not just kidnap Michelle Yu’s character I’m sure Bishop wouldn’t leave her to die either however Alba is actually pretty good in her early scenes and when she and Bishop fall for each other it feels genuine if rushed I don’t buy that there is a fairy tale romance but I believe wouldn’t let some evil gangsters kill her I also thought it was a neat twist to get her deception out of the way early so they didn’t drop it like a bomb halfway through and make us question whether Bishop would abandon her for a while I wondered if it would turn out her story about being kidnapped was itself a cover and she was really just working for the villain which would have made more sense but not so much then there are the hits the first one is fun and inventive with Bishop having to disguise himself as a wanted criminal so he can be sent to the same prison as an African warlord who says he plans on conquering all of Africa which good luck with that and poison him from behind bars I like this whole sequence quite a bit it shows Bishop’s tradecraft and the meticulous detail that goes into planning a hit that looks like an accident however it strikes me that if the warlord was simply stabbed to death in prison this would be considered a common enough occurrence that no one would ask too many questions this guy in particular has another prisoner who wants him dead because the warlord killed his brother in fact Bishop actually has to save the warlord’s life so he can later kill him under more mysterious circumstances it’s very cool and the suspense is held up admirably but it still feels like wasted effort the second is the one that starts off the trailer where Bishop suctions under that pool that hangs off the side of a building and cracks the glass underneath so the guy falls 70 stories to his death don’t worry we’re assured he made his fortune in sex trafficking again the visuals and forgive me mechanics of the hit are very interesting and it’s another fun sequence but why would anyone ever have a pool like that it makes absolutely no sense even if we’re suspending dis belief in which I’m a big believer even if he weren’t on Bishop’s hit list I would think any rational person would be afraid of the pool eventually cracking it’s forgivable because it’s a neat moment but the leaps and logic do add up after a while the villain himself cran Sam hazeldine is okay I like his backstory and the way he’s tied to Bishop but he’s mostly there to sneer at threaten and ultimately get killed by Jason Statham to that end he’s fine and I like the Thematic symmetry of his come up and Michelle yo has a thankless role that could have been played by anyone Tommy Lee Jones is barely in the film which is the biggest disappointment I had visions of him going into action with staffen but instead he just allows staffen to fake his death then disappears until the end to provide some visual Exposition I don’t think he even has five full minutes of screen time he does have a couple of funny lines though hopefully somewhere down the road he can be better utilized Maybe by playing a villain worthy of Statham my biggest worry when mechanic Resurrection was announced was the change and directors from Simon West Conair Expendables too the General’s daughter the highly underrated wild card to relatively unknown German filmmaker Dennis gansel luckily gansel handles the the action well with no shaky Cam and very fluid movements the action is fast but coherent and it makes for a very entertaining movie when the deceitful actions of a cunning but beautiful woman named Gina Jessica Alba force him to return to the life he left behind ARA Bishop’s Jason staffen life is in danger as he has to complete an impossible list of assassinations of the most dangerous men in the world my experience of Jason St in action films at least because I loved him and spy has been limited to only the transporter series that experience does not include the previous mechanic film which itself was a remake to a 1972 film that I haven’t seen either don’t worry if you haven’t seen the previous film because most people didn’t as you should have no problem with this one even if you haven’t seen it you probably already saw it in one form or another Arthur Bishop staff thought he had gotten away from his assassin past but when a beautiful woman in distress comes along in Gina Alba she forces him back once she is taken by a group of dangerous men led by a man named crane Sam hazeldine with whom Bishop has passed history in order to get her back Bishop must perform a series of assassinations all around the world what was special about these assassinations were that they had to be accidents the beginning was when the plot fell apart things never seem to make much sense and Snowboard from there suffice it to say that this film requires a lot of suspension of belief in order to enjoy it this fact did not really come as much of a surprise this wasn’t always possible however as practical aspects of the film were decent like the fight choreography but most of the film’s special effects was hard to take the film relied heavily on CGI during action scene sequences which is okay in general but since they were so terrible here they distracted from what was happening on screen the story itself wasn’t overly original and was another cliched Revenge Story the plot wasn’t exactly that interesting and was more on the Bland side but many people probably won’t care since it’s just an excuse to see Statham beat people up and he beat up a lot of people here it seemed like he was facing an less lineup of stupid henchmen the fact that it was so easy for him made things less exciting with the novelty of it going away pretty fast again people will probably not care about this but there should be more purpose to what was happening watching Bishop plan his various assassinations was kind of exciting and he was kind of ingenious as a character but that’s not saying much compared to everyone else around him some of the things he was able to do here defied belief which was also not much of a surprise considering how the rest of the film went this added to the Allure of the character besides Bishop there wasn’t much to any of the other characters as they were all rather one-dimensional Gina served little purpose and her relationship with Bishop felt forced and lacked chemistry crane was a boring and cliched villain the acting was okay with staffen being exactly what you would expect here in a Ro that was never a stretch for him he didn’t really need to act too much here as he mostly just beat a lot of people up Alba was not that great as Gina but she didn’t have much to do she was the cliche female and distress and had no chemistry with Statham which made their scenes almost cringeworthy Michelle yo was wasted as one of Bishop’s old friends named May Tommy Lee Jones was also criminally wasted as one of Bishop’s assassinated Target he was a little fun playing a much different role than usual his screen time was much less than the trailers implied overall this was a bad action film with a silly plot bad special effects okay action and okay performances mechanic Resurrection is the sequel to the 2011 film that I actually quite enjoyed this one once again Stars Jason Statham as the the professional killer who can make anything look like an accident this sequel adds Jessica Alba as well as Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle yo kind of this story again follows Hitman Arthur Bishop who has been enjoying his retirement until an enemy from his past kidnaps the love of his life that he met the day before and forces him to complete three difficult contracts in exchange for her life now if that’s synopsis and the fact that the word Resurrection are in the title are not enough to warn you of what you are getting into with this film The ridiculously over the top opening sequence surely will this sequel follows a story we have seen many times and one we will see for years to come it’s extremely predictable does little to grab your attention but is enough to keep your interest if you are looking for some mindless action this film has his all the cliché love interest cheesy performances cut and paste dialogue a cardboard villain and a paint by numbers plot but it still serves its purpose as a film that Teeters on being so bad it’s good well not good but serviceable for something you want to put on while you are doing something actually productive Jason Statham had his moments he pulls off the action sequences in all their Splendor and with many wild tasks forced on his character there is some fun to be had he does feel mildly lifeless in the non-action scenes however not being able to mask the fact even he knew the dialogue was terrible Jessica Alba was there she didn’t really make the most of the role and while she does give effort the result was what you would expect given the material she had to work with the chemistry between Alba and Statham was Bland and did little to sell their love Dynamic the things this film have going for it is many colorful International locations loads of shallow action and all the textbooks Statham ask kicking another thing it has in its favor is what I call its cheese Factor something this film has tons of the sequences are so over the top it borders unintentional as does some of the television grade special effects the scenes bring laughs as Statham is diving onto a paraglider unloading a clip as he is falling backwards in slow motion or sliding down the face of a building added with a overly forced musical score and the result is something from the 80s era of action romps minus some Charisma overall mechanic Resurrection is bad enough to make a laugh watching it and making fun of it while still enjoying some of it despite the lack of ambition in every other aspect of a creation Michelle Y and Tommy Lee Jones were wasted but even more screen time from them would not have made this much better about halfway through the idiotic dumbness that is mechanic Resurrection the unasked for sequel to The cspit of unthinking nihilism and misogyny that was 2011’s the mechanic I found myself drifting into a feminist revery what if I imagined fancying myself in a better smarter Kinder world just Alba’s Gina here with the Mastermind pulling all the strings behind the scenes What If instead of the Damsel in Distress she appears to be she is in fact manipulating all the overgrown boys with guns who get off on throwing violent Tantrums twisting them so that instead of spewing their deep rooted anger and otherwise unexpressed self-hatred outward at innocence they turned it on one another for the benefit of increasing the overall happiness of the world I mean I thought this almost has to be the case Gina is way over playing the lady Fair she actually faints into the arms of Jason Statham’s professional killer Arthur Bishop when he rescues her well the first time he rescues her there will be others though my fantasy Theory doesn’t quite jive with how events eventually resolve themselves I am going to cling to this idea because it makes the movie so much better than what is actually on the screen which is an absurd often laughably inep weed assemblage of cheap and cheesy green screen effects as backdrops for shootouts and punch-ups with Anonymous armies of Canon fodder That 80s action movies starring martial artists long ago made redundant Resurrection is directed by Dennis gansel yet another white male filmmaker handed the Reigns of a big budget Studio action flick even though he has no track record with such while female filmmakers with track records cannot get worse and it shows Resurrection is supposed to be intense and gritty but it’s just silly unless it’s secretly all about how Gina Alba Entourage barely lethal is ridding the world of its most notorious arms dealers it’s actually the only good explanation for why the character of Gina exists in the movie at all see crane Sam Hazel Dean the Huntsman Winter’s War Grimsby an old acquaintance of Bishops who is very bad indeed wants to eliminate his Rivals Krill fi aluu Jr the legend of 19 cook Toby Edington and Adams Tommy Lee Jones Jason Bourne Hope Springs did you know that there’s a handy online chart that breaks down the global market share for nefarious underworld arms dealers it’s colorcoded and everything sad the war dogs guys haven’t made it onto it yet the fact that be are literally the worst people in the world hobbies include turning kids into soldiers and the sex trafficking of children infinitely worse than being a lone wolf freelance assassin like Bishop apparently wasn’t considered justification Enough by the movie for him to take on the job for Crane even though Bishop staffen furious seven spy has what should be sufficient personal interest to do so I was an orphan I was sold to an East End gangster I’m pretty sure the movie didn’t intend for us to laugh at this no screenwriters Philip Shelby Survivor and Tony Moser seemed to believe that there was only one way that Bishop could be prodded into killing those three men reluctantly under great duress even though he’s like the mver of Assassins and seems to love his work crane had to kidnap Gina and threaten to kill all the kids at the pnom pen shelter she runs for former victims of child sex trafficking unless she agreed to entrap Bishop the idea was that Bishop would instantly fall in love with her seriously she is like a smoking hot Mother Teresa so who wouldn’t and then crane could kidnap her again take her away from Bishop and keep threatening to kill her until Bishop finishes the three killings it doesn’t quite go to Crane’s plan of course not it’s going to Gina’s plan obviously though it skips over the bit about how Gina manipulated crane into kidnapping her I bet it was brilliant though what we see on screen is apparently Gina becoming almost instantly genuinely smitten with Bishop but clearly she is faking she must be because as a noble do gooda she is actually repulsed by a professional killer like Bishop not Charmed by him but if she can get him to wipe out the very men who hurt her shelter kids in the first place and other men like him the world will be a much better place bonus Bishop keeps promising to kill crane too just on principle so one more dead bad guy who can’t hurt people anymore so much that is seemingly stupid in this movie makes sense if Gina is behind it all like how after telling her tale of geopolitical horror and abused children to Bishop she can go for a nice relaxing sexy swim she’s not worried about anything she is in fact relieved that he has bought her so story about needing to be lady saved by a big strong Brave man but Gina has even more surprising talents she might actually be a witch like a proper Harry Potter witch who can do magic it’s the only way to account for how Bishop is able to carry out his Globe popping assassinations on such tight deadlines first he’s got 36 hours to get from Bangkok to Sydney to kill cook and like at least a third of that is eaten up by travel time alone then he’s got only 24 hours to get from Sydney to Vana Bulgaria to off Adams and 24 hours is almost exactly as long as it takes to make that trip at a minimum I would say that Gina might have given him her gr’s Time Turner except that would give away Gina’s game so she is somehow manipulating not only petulant tantrum throwing Manchild but time itself all from the comfort of her captivity on Crane’s yacht she arranges for Bishop to come across sharp repellent cream at a Street Market just when he’s going to need it if only Blake Lively had known about this stuff in the shallows she enables him to make a replica of a key from only a photo of it actually that’s possible this has been a public safety announcement from Gina who loves you please don’t post photos of your keys on Facebook oh and somehow she also teleports Bishop into a place he couldn’t possibly have gotten into the safe room in Adams’s heavily fortified villains Lair without Bishop even realizing she’s done it director Dennis gansel and his crew deliver a film that has the look and feel of firste film students who’ve bitten off a bit more than they can chew besides wondering how Jessica Alba wound up in mechanic Resurrection the next biggest question audiences will ask is how on Earth did Tommy Lee Jones wind up in it as well the answer to this may never truly be known but is not hard to imagine money was in there somewhere one of the few positive points about mechanic Resurrection is that you don’t need to have seen the first film to watch it the film’s opening sequence apart from some very sloppy green screen work is pretty entertaining and plays like a 1970s Bond pre-edit sequence with a shitload more testosterone it would not have been a surprise if a Trent rnor Atticus Ross inspired version of Nobody Does it Better started playing when Bishop sails off into the sunset and the title card crashes onto the screen to tell everyone they’re watching yep you guessed it mechanic Resurrection no sooner has Bishop evaded a goon squad in Brazil he’s pulling up on a remote Thailand Island vaguely reminiscent of the island chain where Roger Moore and Christopher Lee pistol dued in The Man with the Golden Gun as our poor man’s James Bond arrives Michelle Yos May is there to hassle him about whatever he needs hassling about Bishop however is like a perennial Boy Scout he’s always prepared with Hightech Computing equipment guns passports and money if you’re annoyed that you haven’t got the mbn yet you’ll be downright filthy that Bishop can get high-speed wireless internet in the middle of the ocean no sooner has he settled into Island life the gorgeous Jessica Alba pops out from behind a palm tree in a smart two-piece bikini that cover only the bare necessities it turns out that her character Gina is being used by Bishop’s arch nemesis crane the sneering Sam hazeldine British who looks like sha Bean on the paleo diet she can’t help being a stuge otherwise the bad guy is going to kill all the kids she teaches at a local Village Bishop being the warm cuddly guy he is Falls head over heels for her only to have more goons arrive and snatch her away cue the Jeopardy somewhere inside mechanic Resurrection is a story waiting to happen unfortunately the screenplay is so slipshod that it’s never made clear why crane chose Gina to do a snow job on Bishop there’s also the grossly convoluted plotting to do with some plan to take over the world’s illicit arms trading supposedly the reason for Bishop being useful in the first place then there’s hero SL antihero Bishop’s three targets are all meant to takeen out with a minimum of fuss but the guy sure knows how to draw attention to his actions as the first two assassinations become newsworthy events Philip Shelby and Tony mosh’s script though is not the only problem who need narrative logic when you’ve Luke besson’s money financing your feature film mechanic Resurrection is the worst looking film to be released in a very long time some shots are not just out of focus they don’t look like they were ever intended to be in focused shot composition literally goes out the window on a number of occasions and the camera fails to follow the action at Key moments director gansel and cinematographer Daniel gotcho display little flare for their material and struggle with getting the most basic scenes captured without making a mess of them fortunately through all of this Statham and Alba Soldier on doing the best they can with what they’re surrounded by presumed dead Hitman AK mechanic Arthur Bishop Jason Statham is about to be called out of retirement when his past catches up with him in Brazil a messenger greets him at his favorite watering Hall trying to blackmail him into killing three men in exchange for not revealing his secret he refuses a fight breaks out and Bishop manages to escape to a small island resort in Thailand run by his friend May michelo while hiding out on the island Bishop discovers that the woman in Brazil works for an old acquaintance of his Ria crane Sam hazeldine at about the same time another attractive woman arrives on the island Gina Thorn Jessica Alba and an apparent victim of domestic abuse when Gina’s boyfriend Frank gets drunk and starts attacking her on their boat May asks Bishop to come to her rescue Bishop arrives and kills Frank in the process and this is where mechanic Resurrection goes completely off the rails in logic Gina was a plant by crane to get Bishop to fall in love with Gina after rescuing her from Frank’s violent attacks in which his goons would come and kidnap Gina in EXT ex change for killing the same three men he refused to do back in Brazil Gina is being blackmailed to go through with this in order to save the lives of her workers and refugees at her shelter for human trafficking victims in Cambodia so guess what happens Bishop falls in love with Gina Gina gets kidnapped by Crane’s goons and the ransom is killing three men and making the deaths look like accidents what follows are a series of stunts set pieces directed as a second unit by Vic Armstrong that are interesting to watch but not exactly original the first involves taking out an African War Lord in a high security prison on a remote island in Malaysia the second is a child trafficker who goes for a swim at the same time each day in his Penthouse pool that literally overlooks the city of Sydney Australia in a scene that is reminiscent of Tom Cruz climbing up a skyscraper in Mission Impossible Ghost protocol the third is ludicrous taking out weapons dealer Max Adams tommmy Lee Jones who resides in a high security Monument to Communism in Bulgaria instead of taking out Adams Bishop partners with him to devise a plan of rescuing Gina and talking out crane the performances are about what one would expect from a movie of this sort the highlights being Alba and yo who actually have some emotions to show staff import betrays Bishop as a cold and ruthless killer Tommy Lee Jones who only appears in a handful of scenes despite being build third above the line is a waste of talent as Adams who doesn’t have much to do in the small amount of screen time afforded to him I found this sequel to be much better than its predecessor but that’s not saying much mechanic Resurrection was captured digitally with red and cameras I swear I saw an AR in one of the featurettes and looks surprisingly good in 4k oud with HDR in some cases it looks too good as it is very obvious that several sequences were filmed in front of a blue or green screen on a Sound Stage rather than on location the opening restaurant sequence is a glaring example as the image goes very soft around the edges whenever the skyline is visible something one tends to see a lot on episodic television such as bones and Agents of Shield on the other hand colors do pop when compared to the 1080p Blu-ray especially the sequences on Ma Island Resort fine detail is quite good overall revealing stubble growth in staff’s beer for example contrast is improved with slightly darker black levels over the Blu-ray providing better Shadow detail mechanic Resurrection contains a very immersive Dolby Atmos track with Dolby truid 7.1 core even when played back on a non- atmos system in a 5.1 configuration with additional front height speakers and pric is enabled helicopters paragliders ocean liners Etc pans seamlessly from one end of the room to another the heights even make good use of Crane’s instructional narration to Bishop as he moves on to the next assignment Mark isham’s score is used effectively to also immerse the audience in the action while dialogue is clear and doesn’t get overwhelmed in the mix the first movie was a remake of the classic 1972 Charles Bronson Thriller starring Jason Statham and was reasonably acceptable to remake I guess of course they then got carried away as always happens and thought it would be a good idea to make a sequel to said remake of the original 1972 classic now everyone knows this would all end in tears and complete failure except the makers of this movie it seems so once again we have yet another movie all about a super agent type bloke that is virtually invincible and that’s about it Bishop Statham is now living in Brazil after faking his death in the last movie he is approached by some bad guys who work for another bad guy crane played by some bloke called Sam hazeldine who wants Bishop to kill three specific people Bishop refuses a fight breaks out Bishop wins and escapes Bishop is now living in Thailand as you do when he rescues a sexy blonde Jessica Alba from some drunk bloke turns out she has been blackmailed by crane to meet up with bishop and seduce him so crane could then fake her kidnapping so he would carry out the hit well lo and behold in time bishop and Gina Alba do fall through each other and low and behold Crane’s goons turn up and kidnap them both now Bishop must carry out the three hits to save his new girlfriend ezy zzy seriously could this be any more cliched and predictable who wrote this how did they even get paid for this unoriginal trip how did this even get a green light for f asterisk CK’s sake for starters this doesn’t feel like an action flick oh no this feels more like a holiday destination video the camera work is honestly stunning Thailand Rio Sydney Malaysia it’s Etc all look beautiful wonderful if you’re watching this on a good TV in 1080P 2K 4K or whatever then these exotic locations will burst through your screen into your living room in bright sharp crisp Vivid colors I lost all interest in the film’s plot and was more interested in the possibility of going to one of these places for my next holiday what’s more all the scenes on the beach in Thailand are enough to make you sick the most perfect beaches you’ve ever seen in your life the most perfect weather and everyone in short is tanned and beautiful with the exception of staffen perhaps what actually happens in the movie is of course ridiculous and crap but that really shouldn’t be any surprise for Bishop’s first hit he must infiltrate a prison in Malaysia well get himself locked up he does this by acting drunk and being a bit rude to a Malaysian cop apparent ly this is enough to get you banged up in this horrendous Maximum Security Prison that looks like it holds the type of people that have eaten someone all these hits have to look like accidents by the way as you can guess this doesn’t really seem to happen in my opinion pretty sure the first hit would look like someone strangled and suffocated the guy because that’s what he did the second hit is what you see on the movie’s poster it involves Bishop having to scale the outside of a skyscraper in order to break a glass bottom swimming pool that overhangs the building in all honesty this is probably the best part of the movie because you see a lot of technical Hitman type jiggery pokery as Bishop works out how to make it look like an accident and then how he manages to scale the outside of the building but Tom Cruz this ain’t it’s all green screen and CGI once again the hip goes without a flaw but I’m pretty sure the guy could have gotten out of the pool in time in between all these Bishop does try to rescue Gina from Crane’s super Posh yacht out at Sea he locates the yacht gets on board and manages to wipe out a good number of faceless henchmen alas he is eventually caught given a good slap with some verbal from Crane and then sent on his merry way to carry out hit number three so basically this entire rescue sequence was completely an utterly pointless filler that didn’t Mount to anything the last stage on this video game Escapade sees Bishop going up against arms dealer Max Adams played by a very old Tommy Lee Jones in order to make Jones look somewhat hip and trendy he wears bizarre clothing some stupid colored circular glasses and has some earrings but because Jones is an alist star they can’t just have him killed off so he teams up with Statham’s Bishop to take on crane this naturally leads to the big final showdown on Crane’s Posh yacht where Bishop this time wipes out all of the faceless henchmen and spoilers kills crane he does this without really breaking sweat or taking any injuries because he’s got his invincibility cheat code switched on you want to see a one-man Army situation well it doesn’t get much more onean army than this Kola I think you got to be a hardcore Jason Statham fan for this one don’t get me wrong I enjoy a good action flick and I’ve got nothing against staffen but the man makes the same over and over and over again he’s becoming the new Steven seagull but with bigger budget flicks every damn movie he makes he’s either Special Forces or an undercover super agent or an ex Special Forces SL exmilitary SLX super cop or whatever with super martial arts skills of course I mean honesty did the movie really need to take place in exotic locations across the globe or was that just the excuse to enable everyone to get a super extravagant holiday that’s all paid for plus you get a wage and you can call it work 5 years after his apparent death Hitman Arthur Bishop is forced back into the deadly game he left in this action-packed sequel having retired by faking his death Arthur Bishop is now living a quiet life in Brazil still one night at his favorite restaurant he comes across Renee Tran a messenger who knows Bishop’s identity and confronts him he is asked to perform three assassinations he refuses and after using his skills to escape Renee and some thugs Arthur heads to a small Cove on the beaches of Thailand where he meets longtime friend May when Arthur sees Gina Thornton an ex-military operative turned off teacher he learns Gina was part of a setup that was meant for Bishop in order for him to be forced to commit the assassinations The Mastermind is Rya crane a notorious arms dealer with ties to Bishop that dates back to when they were orphans together crane blames Bishop when as kids Bishop escaped the clutches of the gangster who raised them to be child soldiers when crane kidnaps Gina Bishop soon finds he has no other choice but to do what he longer wanted to do will Bishop be able to go back to his old ways as a means to save Gina or will he have other plans that can perhaps save both himself and Gina from the deadly clutches of crane in 2011 Jason Statham starred in the remake of the classic 1972 Charles Bronson film The Mechanic one would have never imagined that there would be a sequel as the original was a one-off itself however Statham is still a name and the first was a hit at the box office so it was inevitable that there would be a followup and it’s pretty much a run of the mil action thriller thanks to Statham makes this film watchable Statham brings that old school mentality as Bishop now retired and doing quite well until he is forced back into the world of assassination even if an action film is a run-of the-mill with a story that has been done to death for one reason or another Jason staum is exactly the one who can still make them watchable staum shines again especially when he is unleashing all sorts of chaos when blowing away villains or beating the heck out of them with his martial arts skills while Jessica Alber Gina may serve as a damsel in distress her character being exmilitary does allow her to show some limited form of action all because Gina cares about the orphans in Cambodia that she takes care of don’t expect Michelle yo to throw fisticuffs in this film she is seen in the First Act in a non-action role as May a bar owner who is the closest to being an ally for Statham she can be said to be a sage-like figure as her character has a history with Bishop but not in the manner one would think Sam hazeldine brings smugness to the role of villain Rya crane who seeks revenge for history with bishop and plans to make him his own personal assassin in the world of arm dealing one of the drug dealers is played with amazing comic Panache by Tommy Lee Jones who looks like an Elton John celebrity impersonator with his eclectic look this is perhaps his funniest look and role since 1995’s Batman Forever which is clear that Jones was having fun with his role as two-c like in Batman Forever Jones is truly having fun with the role mechanic Resurrection is a wild ride of a SE equal with Jason Statham driving a run-ofthe-mill action film that rises a bit Above the Rest due in part to Tommy Lee Jones obvious fun role if you like the original you might just like this sequel there are two ways to handle sequels either continue story lines that were unresolved in the previous film or start a whole new story line however if a sequel opts for the latter then it needs to treat the new story with the same care and atten mentioned at the previous film offered taking pains to set up histories relationships motivations and more it’s not enough to Simply take for granted that since audiences are already familiar with the protagonist that they’ll accept the new bad guy or the hero’s new squeeze mechanic Resurrection makes precisely that mistake and assumes that necessary story foundations can be done away with and still present a satisfying film regrettably the filmmakers are wrong arthor Bishop Jason Statham is living and hiding in Rio after he faked his death in the previous film despite his efforts to remain anonymous Bishop is approached by a mysterious woman who wants to hire his services for her boss a man named crane Sam hazeldine and she makes it clear that Bishop can’t refuse but he does and he makes a daring escape to Thailand while investigating crane Bishop meets Gina Jessica Alba who is having trouble with her abusive boyfriend Bishop rescues Gina but suspects her as a tool of crane to get Bishop to do Crane’s bidding despite that concern they fall in love and crane nabs Gina and threatens to kill her unless Bishop executes three specific men and makes their deaths look accidental Bishop has no choice but to carry out the mission Jason staffen has a singular brand as Hollywood’s last dedicated Action Hero whether it’s driving at break neck speeds or just breaking necks Statham is the actor for all of your action needs as such it’s disappointing that the projects he’s getting aren’t continually elevating his brand mechanic Resurrection is action oriented but it doesn’t offer anything that audiences haven’t seen before and even if one argues that nothing new exists in the world of action then the other failing is that the film doesn’t offer action at a consistently high level the opening sequence is promising with Statham showing off some unexpected moves like pummeling a woman in the face with a table or shoving a man’s face into a lit barbecue but after that the action becomes more mundane with standard shooting and takedowns the action isn’t bad it just feels routine and Bishop never feels challenged throughout the film even when he squares off against the main villain the relationship with Gina as the love of Bishop’s life is shoehorned into the film while the first film had some heart with Ben Foster as the son of one of Bishop’s victims Alba’s Gina just feels like a matfin to get Bishop moving typically that’s fine but the film spends so much time building a background for Gina and a clever way to insert her into Bishop’s life that one would expect that Gina would feel more organic to the story at least Ben Foster’s character had some kind of relationship with Bishop Gina is just some pretty girl that’s coerced into luring Bishop into the Trap why did crane choose her an obscure woman in Cambodia when there are other pretty faces that are probably easier to get to the structure of the story is the biggest drag on Mechanic Resurrection it really should have begun by focusing on the villain Crane and his history with Bishop Bishop that way audiences don’t have to watch Bishop explain in dialogue who crane is to him instead the film shows the audience then in the present day crane could run into a problem with the three men he needs killed he doesn’t have the skill to do it himself so he has to hire Bishop knowing that Bishop wouldn’t help freely crane could send his own girlfriend to win Bishop’s affections and then kidnap her instead of the human Arian worker angle that the current plot offers when Bishop returns to rescue Gina only to discover that she’s a bad guy perhaps Gina could have actually fallen in love with bishop and help him defeat crane maybe even sacrificing herself in the process that would have been far more satisfying than what audiences get which is a prototypical action movie with bad guys who don’t behave believably it’s also worth noting that the R rating is more of a gimmick than anything else a lot of people get shot and there’s a little blood spatter but it’s hardly visceral even when grenades blow up right next to people there’s no Gore this criticism also extends to the sex scene between Stam and Alba they’re both almost fully clothed and don’t touch anything beyond each other’s butts in a modern society where actual film sex is usually viewed alone this PG attempt is just embarrassing to to watch as a group if a film won’t give audiences the goods then it should just do a tasteful Fade Out and Fade Into the next day with the couple waking up next to each other there’s a stint in the middle of mechanic Resurrection where you finally start to understand why two writers Philip Shelby Tony Moser four producers John Thompson Robert Earl David Winkler William chartoff and a director Dennis gansel have worked tirelessly to make sequel to a film that no one really wanted it doesn’t last that long though after Arthur Bishop Jason staff’s new girlfriend Gina Jessica Alba who he has literally known for less than three days is kidnapped the former Hitman is forced to come out of retirement to complete three impossible assassinations which he also must make look like accidents otherwise she will be killed by villain Ria crane Sam hazeldine watching staff meticulously plan out and then get inside Thailand’s impenetrable prison murder its most famous inmate and then quickly Escape before he then has to do the same in Sydney Australia to a multi-millionaire in a luxurious but once again heavily guarded Penthouse highrise in the middle of the city is just plain old fun these scenes are well constructed paced and built in an entertaining and ultimately satisfying manner that just just about make the previous blatant inadequacies of mechanic Resurrection forgivable it also helps that Jason Stam is able to sell each of these sequences so well in fact watching Statham in mechanic Resurrection made me think of a sequence in Peter bogdanovich’s documentary on John Ford directed by John Ford in this John Wayne recalls some Sterling advice that the legendary director gave to the young actor as he informed him Duke you’re going to get a lot of scenes in your life they’re going to seem corny to you play them play them to the hilt you’ll get by with it that pretty much sums up why Jason Statham has been a Mainstay in the action genre for the last 14 years as there’s always a palpable intensity and professionalism to his performances that means he’s able to make even the most outlandish and outrageous action sequence just about believable because of his physique agility you believe that he’s fearless and could easily eliminate anyone that he has his eye on while because of his Cockney accent and innate calmness he’s able to convince you that he’s as smart as a whip and able to improvise and think on his feet too the problem comes when he opens his mouth especially considering the Diabolical dialogue plot relationships and conflicts that Jason Statham has to sell in mechanic Resurrection despite mechanic resurrection’s deviation into entertainment when we get to see Arthur Bishop working wonders it’s unfortunately bookmarked by lackluster opening and closing acts that soften the impact of your enjoyment during this time first of all it’s tedious and painful to see Jessica Alba and Jason staff’s relationship grow as the pair fail to produce one spark of romance between the pair of them they are even tied together at one point to forcibly create camaraderie the pair are not helped by sycophantic Hackney Direction and writing during this time which includes overly dramatic torty Back stories swells of emotional music and even a sex scene Montage that feels like it’s been ripped straight from the room it’s a welcome relief when Jessica Alba is actually kidnapped then after mechanic Resurrection has redeemed itself it sadly resorts to loud commonplace ill-planned out action scene for its finale which even the random appearance of Tommy Lee Jones as an arms dealer dressed like a biker hippie hybrid from the future can’t Salvage well he does a little but it’s like running into your granddad on a sinking ship you know you’re about to go through something bad you’re just glad tlj is there to hold your hand through it all since the original only grossed $62 million from a 40 $ million budget after average reviews it’s hard to know why a mechanic Resurrection was green lit in the first place sure it’s not a complete waste of your time but after sitting through it for 99 minutes it’s so obviously average and only ever so slightly enjoyable that I’m still and probably always will be none the wiser for its creation wait this movie is actually a sequel there was a movie named the mechanic you see that is the problem of Jason sta movies they are thoroughly enjoyable women love the manly characters he plays men wish to be the manly characters he plays but they are also of the same mold can anyone articulate the difference between 2002’s the transporter and the two sequels that followed in 2005 and 2008 for that matter 26’s crank and 29’s crank High Vol Vol AG for that matter 2008’s the bank job and 2013’s hummingbird they all have staffen portraying anti-heroes with a handsomely sculpted board nonetheless fighting off baddies by performing his own stunts the plot air they don’t really matter the 49-year-old conveniently takes on yet another similar role in mechanic Resurrection okay if you must know it is a sequel to a 2011 movie which was a remake of a 1972 film of the same name and impresses viewers by well fighting off baddies and intense and overthe toop action scenes yep viewers will also be treated to scenes of the English actor showing off his handsomely sculpted bod Dennis gansel Helms this action thriller with a screenplay written by Philip Shelby and Tony marer you wonder why two writers are involved when the movie simply involves Arthur Bishop Statham who chooses to live his life quietly after faking his death in the fist movie is forced to return to the world of crime by killing three targets and staging them as accidents the 99-minute movie brings viewers on a no-brainer Globe trotting adventure to Thailand Penang Sydney Rio de janer own Bulgaria if you have been agreeable to staff’s previous movies you will be able to sit through this one without too many complaints you will get your share of close combat sequences which are to be fair engagingly edited as described earlier women will love this manliness and men will wish that they are this manly these are shamelessly enjoyable guilty pleasures which will draw fans of action movies into the theaters the other reason why men may love this movie is the presence of Jessica Alba remember the good old days when she boogied her way into men’s hearts in Honey 23 three hypnotize men as exotic dancer Nancy Callahan in Sin City 2005 wore sexy bikinis in Into the Blue 2005 and remain sensationally attractive as Su storm in Fantastic 4 2005 the 35-year-old actress still has the goods and sure knows how to flaunt them for that you even forgive the laughably awkward sex scene between her and Stam another notable addition to the sequel is Michelle y who is ridiculously wasted in a role that only requires her to look wise and spout intelligent lines who else better to portray this than an Asian character did you really need someone to say those are best at killing are also the best at healing what seems to be lacking is only a crystal ball for her to gaze into Tommy Lee Jones looking as cranky as ever in his earrings tiny sunglasses and colorful shirts rounds up the car asked as a baddy who well gives Statham a reason to pave the way for another possible sequel
