Why I Finally Quit Spotify: How Spotify got too enshittified to use for listening to music, and the cognitive dissonance of trying to do something with an app that its designers don’t want you to do anymore

    > Software-interface design quietly dictates so many of our online experiences today; it determines not just how we consume culture but what we consume as well. A tweak to an app’s landing page may seem minor; what’s the big deal if it takes an extra click or two to get to your library of albums? But such inconveniences have rippling effects; if albums are harder to get to, then over time they become less important as units of online listening.

Spotify kept bombarding me with Espresso, Please x 3, Birds of a Feather, and Million Dollar Baby until I got fed up. I ditched Spotify for Apple Music and I’m honestly really happy with the switch.

  3. I mostly use the app but honestly I don’t have a problem getting to an artist’s discography or listening to albums in full. I do get annoyed by Spotify playing the same promoted songs on every playlist though, so what really seems more difficult is discovering new music relevant to my tastes. I used to find cool, new (to me) artists pretty regularly but that doesn’t happen much anymore.

works fine for me, i have my curated list of favorites and it recommends lots of music i never heard of based on my likes. my only complaint is how it pushes “podcasts” and other such garbage into my feed.

  5. I’ve really only kept Spotify up due to the student discount (and being in school forever) or working at Starbucks. I don’t seem to have the problem everyone else does with getting constant Sabrina Carpenter or Sw*ft songs promoted? Not sure why. Trying to search for and play a specific artists album feels like too many steps (along with other functions) but I guess I don’t hate it enough to try anything else.

I’m so glad more people are talking about this. That million dollar baby got me fed up. I honestly only have Spotify at this point because of wrapped.
