Katy Perry’s Relief After ‘Idol’ Exit; Carrie Underwood Steps In

Katy Perry endured significant difficulties while working on American Idol and is now relieved to have moved on, according to a source close to the singer. Although she doesn’t envy Carrie Underwood for taking over her judging role, she’s keeping a watchful eye on the season 4 winner as she steps into her new position.

“It was the most challenging job Katy ever had, with the relentless trolling, harsh backstabbing, and constant gossip behind the scenes,” the source reveals. “Some individuals just didn’t want to put in the effort. It was frustrating because Katy is highly professional and dislikes wasting time. She’s definitely glad to be out of that environment, even though she made a lot of money.”

Katy, 39, announced back in February that the 22nd season of American Idol, which concluded in May, would be her final season as a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

“I have a deep love for Idol. It’s connected me with the heart of America,” she mentioned on Jimmy Kimmel Live! at the time. “But I feel like it’s time for me to follow my own rhythm and explore the world, maybe even create some new music.”

Katy did release new music a few months later, dropping the bubblegum pop track “Woman’s World” on July 11, marking her first release since 2020. The song is the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album, 143. However, the track didn’t receive favorable reviews from critics. It also sparked controversy due to Katy’s collaboration with Dr. Luke, who has been accused of sexual assault by Kesha.

Additionally, the music video for “Woman’s World” received backlash from fans who felt it mocked female empowerment anthems. Katy defended the video, stating it was intended as “satire.”

Katy’s departure from American Idol coincides with her challenging return to music. An insider notes, “She probably attributes the difficulties of her comeback to the backlash she faced during her time on Idol.”

Five months after Katy’s exit announcement, the show revealed that Carrie Underwood, 41, would be taking over as a judge in the upcoming season.

“CARRIE! From #AmericanIdol hopeful, to global icon…to IDOL judge! Home-grown superstar @carrieunderwood will join us for season 8,” American Idol announced on Instagram, along with a video of Carrie reflecting on her journey from a contestant to a global superstar.

Though Carrie has previously been a contestant and a mentor on the show, this will be her first time as a judge. Katy believes Carrie will face significant challenges and offers her support.

“Katy thinks Carrie is a great person and wishes her all the best, but she’s entering a very tough environment,” the insider shares. “Katy has offered to be a sounding board for Carrie, knowing she might need advice as she navigates this new role.”
