  1. > “Too much policing of stories and being afraid to bring them out because a climate is a certain way is a shame. I’m not sure I’m on board with trigger warnings,” Smith said.

    > “It’s OK to feel uncomfortable or provoked while looking at a painting or watching a play, but I worry everything’s being dialed and dumbed down. We’re telling audiences they’re going to be scared before they’ve watched something.”

In my opinion his character is dreadfully boring in house of dragons and truthfully I don’t much like his personal beliefs either. Seems like a dick.

  3. There’s a video rental chain near me that did trigger warnings in the 90s, before that was the term.

They really needed an editor for their labels. They would have movies with warnings like “Contains gunfire, loud car sounds, murder, man stabbed near a river, child dismemberment, social drinking.”

  4. Considering how many people think that if you have a racist in a show, that means the show is condoning racism, I have to agree with him. Where are all that gross out teen comedies? Are people really looking at American Pie and thinking thats some kind of advert for how you should be and how highshool/college is? When did we stop getting the joke that movies like these are exaggerations of reality, and thats why they are funny?

And warning about old movies/tv shows? Do we really need them? Its 1950, people were dumb and smoked and called ladies “dollface” as a compliment. Is that really triggering someone??? Popeye Doyle in the French Connection is a flawed character. His police man has picked up some racist leaning due to his time spent on the force and the types of people he deals with. Its a commentary on reality, not an endorsement of it, yet the movie has been edited to remove a scene with some light racist remarks.

So I take what Matt says here as a truth. Stories are being changed, or not considered because the audience might be offended. Which is fucking stupid. Willy in the Simpsons is a stereotype of Scottish people. Not a very falttering one at that. Guess what? We fucking love him! We even had two towns fighting over who got to say they were Willys birth place. I shit you not, councils actually fought to have their towns named the birthplace of Grounds keeper Willy.

People need to unclench, and stop looking for offence. Not everything has to cater to you. Not everything is for you. Some times, you are going to see things that upset you. Fucking deal with it.
