Movie looks like absolute garbage. It might bag some throwaway original song nomination, but that's it. Grande looks like a future Razzie winner based on the trailers.
Nah, to a layman like me who’s not familiar with the play or the movie, Ariana totally doesn’t seem like a lead in this. Or, I suppose you can say she’s a secondary lead. But I definitely wouldn’t say they’re co-leads or on equal footing.
Even if both actresses gave the greatest performances in the world, I dont think they'll be nominated. The Academy generally only looks at certain types of movies. They like their period pieces, biopics and dramas. Unless someone like Meryl Streep or Leonardo DiCaprio was attatched to it, I dont think they'd give it any real attention, for the acting category.
Universal’s decision to campaign Cynthia Erivo in lead and Ariana Grande in supporting actress is smart and makes perfect sense because trying to campaign them both in lead could result in neither one of them getting a nomination. Now will they both end up getting nominated, time will tell
We also need to consider that it is an adaption and won’t be a one to one adaption of the book. An example; the book the musical is based of had ephaba as the sole main character, glinda is in maybe 5% of the book max.

Honestly, I could see where for this first Wicked film, Erivo's Elphaba could have more screen time and Grande's Glinda have less to add them into those categories. Meanwhile, in the second film, they would flip the award considerations.
