Excerpt:

In a press release, the label points out that this campaign continues McCartney's staunch platform of activism and making a difference in the world. "Saving the animals will save Mother Earth, and thus ourselves," it reads.

The two campaign stars also filmed videos, reinforcing "it's about f—ing time" to make a difference. Mendes filmed her video in Spanish, while Raye called out the word "mother" in a number of languages.

The label highlighted both women in a press release for why they were chosen for the campaign, emphasizing the work they've done, most notably for women and people of color.

  1. I love this! We need to speak up for the animals. It’s disheartening to see people still wearing fur in 2024.

  2. ClarielOfTheMask on

Cruelty free is great, but let’s not get lost in the weeds. Browsing through the collection it seems like they do that annoying thing were they have branded or trademarked fabrics to obscure what things are made of. Like the £700 bag that’s made of “Matte vegan Shaggy Deer fabric” is polyester (55% virgin, 45% post-consumer recycled). The £1500 dress mentions no fabric until you click through to a separate product details tab and boom – made of 58% Viscose, 42% acetate. So cruelty free, but not super sustainable

Most vegan leather alternatives rely on plastic and other fossil fuel products. They might not use animal products, but it is not a net good or even a net neutral for animals in general if we keep consuming plastics. Mushroom leather, pineapple leather, cactus leather, etc. all currently rely on PU coatings to remain durable enough for any use.

It’s a noble idea and we should keep pursuing it, but at the moment, if you want a leather look – the most sustainable way to do that is to get used/second hand real leather. Or just don’t try to make things that look like leather! My favorite vegan food highlights the ingredients that are included rather than try to imitate something it’s not. There’s a lot of great fashion you can make out of natural fibers.

  3. Wtf are “responsible materials” though?

I’m sick to death of the demonization of leather in favor of “vegan leather” that has a ridiculously short lifespan all while shedding micro plastics everywhere. 😮‍💨

  4. Vegan leather is just plastic. Why do we need “fake” things that mimic, why not create new textures and fabrics?

  5. yeah I’m good with my leather jacket that will last 40 years with proper care. Overconsumption is the issue, not leather. mainlining pleather under the guise of sustainability is bogus greenwashing bullshit.
