Demi Lovato interviews Raven Symone on what it was like starting to work at such an early age in her Hulu documentary “Child Star”

  1. Raven does seem better adjusted than a lot of other child stars. I wonder why that is.

Hilary Duff is another one that seems relatively normal, which is interesting considering that her mother had a reputation for being difficult and volatile. iirc, she supposedly lost the lead role in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen over her mom’s demands.

Growing up is hard enough. All the money, fame, and pressure of being a child star makes it so that the ones that *don’t* publicly crash are the exceptions.

And so many of them have nutjobs for parents

  2. I have two kids that I’m often told I should put in tv or commercials (one is freakishly charismatic and naturally funny, the other is super tiny and reads two years younger) and while I’m flattered that people think my kids are cute and entertaining, I’m repulsed by the idea that I would monetize their childhood, or their personalities. Fame seems horrible. Fame for children seems to especially insidious. My daughter met a girl at the park who she clicked with instantly, but after I exchanged info with her mom I found out she runs a tiktok account ABOUT her daughter with over a million followers. It’s gross, the videos where she’s in a bathing suit have 3x the engagement, it’s not rocket science to see why her 4 year old kid is getting engagement. We need way, way more protections for kids who are working on social media.

  3. I tried to post a discussion post about this documentary yesterday, but it was rejected for being low-impact.

Anyway… the documentary isn’t actually about child stars in general. It is about Demi Lovato. She got some really good interviews but these interviews are relatively short and don’t get much of a deep dive.

In this clip, Raven is indirectly making the point that she didn’t chose acting, her parents chose it. The documentary tries to make a very different point- that child actors are quirky and driven to create their own careers. There is a level of unpacking that Demi isn’t willing to do.
