I miss this type of character in teen television today. The mean girl with a golden hearts (except Alison but she’s way to iconic for me to not put her in )

does prudence blackwood count? a rival to the main character who ends up being more complex than that.

also, genuine question: did this trope really go anywhere? i feel like i’ve seen varying degrees of it over the years. like kaia gerber’s character in *bottoms* (a low key version, less of a slow burn) and *do revenge* felt like a flip where we follow the character not knowing she had a mean girl past. it could have disappeared from tv shows though, i admit i’m not super up to date on those

  2. I never liked that trope, because it kind of white washed high school bullies. And i think it comes from a place of admiration for those bullys’ apparent charisma and justifying that by adding some schmaltzy “heart of gold” aspect to them when in reality, such characters have traumatized legions of people.

Also, i hated when Cordelia and Angel had a romance. Absolutely hated it.

  3. Blair is a bully……and a mean girl with no golden heart lol, I get she’s iconic but lol. Cordelia also bullied Willow, she went through character development but I don’t think she started off with a golden heart lol

Actually so many of these characters were just plain mean but had a tragic backstory so you were like it’s fine…but it’s not fine for you to be mean to other people lol..that’s why most of them weren’t liked in their show universe. Iconic though
