    Oh man.

She will be missed – she had such a wonderful, long career and I think I’ve loved her in every roll of hers I’ve seen.

  2. Oh man. *The Secret Garden* was a beloved childhood movie of mine and she was so good in it. I was never really into the Harry Potter movies at all, but she was a great McGonagall, too.

Loved her as an actress and loved her especially in the 4 Dames movie that made her seem equally delightful as a person. What a career and what a life.

She’s been around so long, I thought she was practically immortal. The Secret Garden was my first favorite movie, and I recently watched through all of the Harry Potter movies with my children. She has been “with” me for my whole life!

  5. An icon and legend in every way!! So many career defining moments – but Violet Crawley will remain the GOAT character for me

She was so amazing in downton abbey. But never forget her awesome role in the secret garden!

To me, she is someone who seemed old but timeless since she was in Hook (compliments to the makeup I guess), so I am a little shook that she was “just” 89. She will be missed by many generations of moviegoers.

  8. Absolutely brilliant actress, a national treasure who will absolutely be missed in the UK and in the film industry as a whole.

So sad 😭 An incredible talent, one of the best to ever do it! If you haven’t seen it, would recommend ‘Nothing Like a Dame’, very funny and sweet documentary featuring a good few of the “big Dames”.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam ❤️

  10. Planned to watch “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” this weekend, but this is heartbreaking …

No! I somehow felt she would be around for ages yet! A star in every sense of the word, her whole career. RIP.💙

  12. She lived a long life and the work she left behind will last. Love to the ones she’s left behind.

I’m so sad. I would have wanted to still see her and enjoy her sense of humour through her work.
