The fat-tailed sheep is a type of domestic sheep known for its… well, fat tail! Fat-tailed sheep breeds are quite common, comprising 25% of the world’s sheep population.

Two general varieties of fat-tails exist: the broad fat-tails and the long fat-tails. The ones you’re seeing here are broad fat-tails. Their fat is accumulated in baggy deposits in the hindquarters, on both sides of the tail, and along the first 3 to 5 vertebrae.

This distinctive feature isn’t just for show. These sheep store energy in their tails, much like camels do in their humps. Their fatty “booty” serves as a food reserve to help them combat harsh desert conditions.
