Michael Shannon is known for his intense, often villainous roles. You’ve probably seen him in Man of Steel (General Zod), Revolutionary Road, The Shape of Water, Nocturnal Animals, Take Shelter, 99 Homes, Knives Out, and Bug. His TV work includes Boardwalk Empire, where he played the unpredictable federal agent Nelson Van Alden, and Waco, where he took on the role of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner. Other standout roles include The Iceman, Premium Rush, 12 Strong, Elvis & Nixon, Freeheld, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, The Runaways, Machine Gun Preacher, and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?.

Before he was Hollywood’s go-to for intense, villainous roles, Michael Shannon worked odd jobs, including as a carpenter and even a telemarketer—a job he once joked didn’t suit him at all.
