In the new Saturday Night Live biopic Saturday Night, Lamorne Morris plays Garrett Morris, SNL's first Black cast member who has trouble finding his place on a predominantly white show. As the only Black lead on New Girl for the majority of its run, the actor strongly related to his character's struggles.

"Garrett being a fish out of water, I definitely felt that in my early years," Lamorne Morris tells Entertainment Weekly. "Being in New Girl, I was a new character after the first episode, so a lot of time was spent trying to develop my character and figure out who I was on the fly. And even though it's not personal, sometimes you take it personal, and you're like, 'What the hell, man? I'm the one Black character on this show, and they don't know how to figure out my character. He ain't got no job. Is that the storyline now?'"

  1. But he goes on to say he realised it wasn’t personal, it’s just really hard to write a good TV character.

  2. He seems like a chill dude i watched him on Jeff Lewis Hollywood house lift and he was an incredibly easy client. Winston was my fav and i like a lot of lamornes other work

Although he adds they found their footing:

“It’s not easy to develop characters for a television series. And so kudos to the writers for figuring it out and really sticking with me because there were days where I felt like I’m going to get fired”

And as a viewer I can agree they totally developed Winston’s character quite well and when Coach returned too the show’s vibe still worked.

Winston was the best character and Lamorne just seems like a great awesome dude. New Girl is my favorite show of all time but there are certainly things that aged poorly and things that were already poor judgement at the time of airing. (Making Winston a cop and then having him date a BLM protestor to show some cops are good guys?? yikes) on the flipside there were moments that were brilliantly done thanks to Lamorne like when Winston tricked Schmidt into thinking he grew up doing crack because he was black. I’m glad he feels comfortable talking about this, and man he’s a great actor
