One of Emilia Clarke’s hardest scenes in Game of Thrones was the infamous horse heart scene from Season 1.
In this scene, her character, Daenerys Targaryen, is required to eat a raw horse heart as part of a Dothraki ritual to determine if her unborn child will be a great leader.Clarke has spoken about the challenges of this scene, revealing that she had to eat an astonishing 28 horse hearts during filming. The prop was made from solidified jam but was designed to taste horrible, with Clarke describing the taste as “like bleach and raw pasta”.
The experience was so nauseating that the crew provided her with a bucket to vomit into between takes.
Another scene that deeply affected her was Daenerys’ transformation into a tyrant in the final season, particularly the destruction of King’s Landing. Clarke described how filming those intense moments left her emotionally drained, with her final scenes profoundly impacting her.
