Suriya Reveals Reason For Moving To Mumbai With Wife

After decades in Chennai, Suriya and Jyotika relocated to Mumbai post-pandemic. Now, the couple primarily resides in Mumbai with their children, Diya and Dev.

In a recent interview, Suriya shared that the move revitalized Jyotika’s career and provided their children with a more grounded lifestyle.

“To be frank, Jyotika moved to Chennai at 18 or 19 and lived there for 27 years, leaving behind her Bandra life, her friends, and her career to be with me and my family. After COVID, a change felt necessary. Her career had plateaued, and the roles felt repetitive. We started 2D Entertainment because there was a lack of women-centric films,” he told The Hollywood Reporter India.

He continued, “Jyotika often faces more challenges than I do. While I get to work with established directors, she frequently collaborates with first-time filmmakers. Since moving, she’s worked on diverse projects like Srikanth, Shaitaan, Dabba Cartel, and Kaathal: The Core, where the writing is much more engaging.”

Suriya reflected on the positive impact the move has had on Jyotika, making her happier both personally and professionally.

“She’s content spending time in Mumbai and reconnecting with her parents. I’ve realized that, just like men, women need vacations, friendships, financial independence, respect, and time for fitness. Why should we take away her time with her family? It’s important to shift from a ‘me-first’ mindset. I’m thrilled to see her growth as an actress, and I hope she finds even more beautiful opportunities.”

Suriya also shared how living in Mumbai has improved family life, allowing him to enjoy simple moments with his children, like going for drives and taking walks in the park.

“My kids are in an IB school, and there are only a few in Chennai. It’s a blessing that they’re thriving academically. We saw wonderful opportunities in Mumbai, which prompted our move. I now balance my time between Chennai and Mumbai, taking at least 10 days off each month to disconnect—no work, no calls—just peace with my family.”

Suriya and Jyotika met on the set of Poovellam Kettuppar in 1999, dated for a few years, and married in 2006. They welcomed their daughter Diya in 2007 and son Dev in 2010.
