Michael Shannon is known for his intense, often villainous roles. You’ve probably seen him in Man of Steel (General Zod), Revolutionary Road, The Shape of Water, Nocturnal Animals, Take Shelter, 99 Homes, Knives Out, and Bug. His TV work includes Boardwalk Empire, where he played the unpredictable federal agent Nelson Van Alden, and Waco, where he took on the role of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner. Other standout roles include The Iceman, Premium Rush, 12 Strong, Elvis & Nixon, Freeheld, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, The Runaways, Machine Gun Preacher, and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?.

Before he was Hollywood’s go-to for intense, villainous roles, Michael Shannon worked odd jobs, including as a carpenter and even a telemarketer—a job he once joked didn’t suit him at all. Surprisingly, despite roles in car-heavy films like Premium Rush, Shannon didn’t have a driver’s license for years. Known for his raw, honest approach, Shannon has a reputation for giving unpredictable interviews where he’s unafraid to share his real opinions about fame and Hollywood. It’s that authenticity that makes him stand out, and fans love his no-nonsense style.

Shannon also has a musical side; he’s the lead singer in a folk-rock band called Corporal, which matches his intense and slightly dark vibe. Acting runs in his family, too—his grandfather, though an entomologist by trade, did some acting, which may have sparked the interest that eventually led Shannon to the stage and screen. He’s never been one to follow the Hollywood mold, and that’s exactly what makes him so memorable.

Fun fact: Shannon started in Chicago theater and co-founded A Red Orchid Theatre.

  1. One of my favorite roles is when he played Leonard the white supremest in Let’s Go to Prison. It’s a silly role, but he’s hilarious!

My two favorite roles: John in Revolutionary Road and the deranged sorority girl in that funny or die dramatic reading of the infamous note haha.

It still baffles me he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for Take Shelter.  Such an incredible performance.

  4. I fucking love this underrated unappreciated massively talented man.

His range is immense but he excels as playing unhinged/pent-up weirdos.

Would watch him reading the telephone book.
